I enjoy tinkering and learning, so I started all over on paper tuning for my 57# Recurve. The set-up:
Bow: 60" Bob Lee Takedown, 57# at 28", 8 1/8" brace, 0.06 calf hair side plate, and D97 string. My draw length (to outside of bow) is 29".
Arrow: 340 spine, 175 gr pile, bare shaft w/electical tape to match feathers weight.

I started off at 31 1/2" arrow length (nock valley to end of carbon). Worked all the way down to 30 5/8" in 1/8" increments, shooting 2 or 3 shots per length thru paper at 6-ft from tip to paper. Took my time over a few days so my arm and fingers were not strained/tired to ensure I get "good" releases (good for me!). Warmed up before I started. Still had the occasional poor release with a little pluck or such and I discount those few.

All tears show weak / nock left. At 31 1/2" length the horizontal of the tear was around 1 1/4" max. But at 30 5/8" the horizontal fo the tear length it is still 1/2". The vertical is like 2", so it has some room to move the nock down to fix that later. The 30 5/8" flies decent at 15-yards, with no noticeable kick out or fish tailing that I can see.

Here's what I find odd: It seems like a lot of arrow shortening to only improve the tear by 50%. I even added 25 gr to the pile a few times to ensure I didn't have a false reading going on and that did not seem to make alot of difference either.

I've never tuned a shaft this stiff before. With 400's and especially 500's it seems like you can see a change every time the arrow is shortened 1/4" Not so much with the 340 spine? Is that your experience when trying to tune a stiffer spine?

confused

Ignore everything until nock high is fixed.

With draw length, form and release variability I find claims of repeatable effects ....of 1/4" shaft length changes and or 25 gr tip weight changes

to be questionable

Focus on the big things and forget the frog hair stuff.
