When a local gun store buys a used rifle, what is the typical percentage below store retail that is offered to the seller? For example, if the store would sell a used Remington 700 for $400, what would they have paid for that rifle? I'm trying to decide whether to help a friend of a friend sell a number of firearms or to just suggest they take them to a local gun store.

Interesting question.

50-60%.

Face-to-face with a private party will net the most for the seller. Then consignment, then trade, then outright sale.

Generally it was around 75-100 minimum, depending on total amount out of pocket. Used guns had a 30 day hold to check to insure they were clean.

If your buddy has a $400 rifle I wouldn’t expect he could sell it to a shop for more than 250-300.ime

lol

The pawn stars “oh I want to give you a fair price, lemme call in an expert”

Pffft

Military town, bloodsucker pawn and gun

400 rem 700

Give the poor schmuck $100-$200 absolute tops

Put a $629 tag on it, dangle a “lay a way” plan out there

Maybe come off it the $29 or drop the sales tax if the buyer pays cash.

ll the while, it’s a 70% gun with a Simmons dorky 50mm scope on it

That there about spells it.

OP, You're not "helping", if you're telling him to go to the gun shop and sell it.

Ya its gonna be all over the map depending on pawn shop, gun shop, big box store etc. For an average gun shop I'd say okie john is about right 50-60% for a cash deal. Maybe 70% if you're trading it in against a new one. 80-90% on consignment where he's not out any money just skims when it sells. The value of the gun will affect the percentages too probably.

Your friend is better off with a local shopper’s paper, thrifty nickel or independent circular like we have here.

A small rag that t is free going out the door of every grocery store here.

All the bubba junk is in there

mowers
guns
Lincoln town cars
Rolls of hay
Free goats
Etc

Do you have anything like that in your area?

I would only give bloodsucker meemaw and peepaw gunshop the pleasure of staring at my bare ass cheeks.

logger,

can you PM me a list of what's for sale? If there's a dealer in the area to do the paperwork and there's something on the list I "need' perhaps I can make a trip over that way or tie it in with one of my bi monthly trips to Ashland?

No, actually just the opposite. She is a very recent widow and she was planning to just go down to the gun store. I wanted to give her an honest idea of what she could lose by doing so, but I wanted to do more than just guess at what a gun store might offer.

Does OR still allow face to face private party sales?

Premature at this time. I have not seen the firearms in person, only in a few poor pictures. I have no idea of condition or specific model, etc. I gave her a rough idea of what each may be worth, with lots of caveats. She is also just recovering from Covid and isn't sure how she wants to deal with the firearms. None are anything special, just good middle class firearms.

No, but it is not really enforced in S. Oregon, but people do worry about stings.

Thanks,

now that I'm retired "good middle class firearms" are about all I can afford.

If she decides she want's your help instead of turning them over to the gunstore, let me know.

Not an issue with me as I'd have to go through a dealer anyway. CA and all that you know.
