I just purchased a "mauser k98 bcd code 1942 " (that is how it was described)rebarelled to .308 off an auction site. It arrived today. Issue 1, the wood is dull and dark. Issue 2, there is a small chip right where the bolt lays against the stock. I have the piece that came out of it. The little piece was just barely hanging on... not disclosed and curiously no picture of this side on the auction listing. Any suggestions on how I should address these two, admittedly seperate problems. I want to keep the gun. Thanks

101, I don't see the issue here. Glue the chip back in place if it bugs you and go shoot the gun. It's been rebarreled, it's not a high end or rare collectable item, it's just a good inexpensive shooting iron.

Use oven cleaner to get the oil/grease out of the stock. Refinish with your choice of methods.
Do not use yellow glue to glue down the chip. If it's a clean 'break' then you won't notice it after you repair it. Yellow glue is not waterproof. use gorilla glue or superglue.

I agree. Just a shooter...but the stock is absolutely incredible wood....swirls and grain and has the schnabel forend. Someone had put some time and money into it at one point. It I just want to finish it up right.

For little repairs like that, I use 5-minute epoxy. It's clear, waterproof, and sets in just few minutes, strong too.
A day without gunfire is hardly worth living.
