I have decided to get me a 7mm. I do miss my old one I sold. But since then there has been added cartrages to the "magnificent 7" So what is better 7 Ultra, 7 Rem, 7 STW or 7 WSM. Right now I'm looking at the 7 Rem or 7 WSM. I do want to use it to take anlimals out to 500 yrds. Deer and pronghorn. I think the Ultra would have too much recoil, but I don't know. So, tell me what you think.

The 280 is awfully impressive.
What's with the Magnumitis? At 500 yard you ain't gonna be on the hair, no matter how super duper your 7 is.

If you've got to have a magnum, get the 7 remmy. A .280 would get it done also and give you a couple of extra rounds in the magazine.
Politicians and Diapers both need to be changed often, and for the same reason!

I grow up with 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm X 57, and the 7mm Weatherby.
I look at the new crop of 7mm rounds, the STW, Short Mags, I just dont see an advantage in the 7mm category.
The 280 is alright, I own a 7mm Mauser and like it, but the 7mm Remington Magnum is a go to round, its been working its magic for years.

Think .280 Ackley Improved if your looking at a custom rifle and you handload.
If you're not gonna roll your own go 7MM Remington Magnum.

It depends on the kind of hunting you plan on using it for. I have all of the above mentioned calibers except the RUM. If it was my only big game rifle to be used to hunt deer to moose I'd go with the STW or RUM. They would give greater range with the heavier bullets for plenty of penetration.
If I was looking for a short, lightweight rig for for deer and sheep, the WSM offers advantages over the others. While a lot of people proclaim the WSM doesn't do anything the others won't, they are correct. It sends a bullet of the same weight, at around the same velocity. But the rifles they can be chambered in can be an advantage if your hunting takes you where the air is thin and the mountains are steep.

JMO but I would go with a 26in barrel and go with the 7mmRemmy. This a all the gun you will need for all north american game. Put a high bc bullet and 500 will be no problem. Even a TSX will get out there super. HAPPY HUNTING

To me you have to look into the ease of finding ammo if you don't reload. I have rarely seen 7STW anywhere and 7mm rem and the WSM ammo are easily found. This is a big part why I don't try to buy the harder to find things. JMO HAPPY HUNTING

Me, I'd get the 7 Rem Mag, which I continue to use, with the STW as second. Only because I think the STW works best with 26" of barrel, and I want 24 in a general purpose rifle.
Not a thing wrong with the 7 WSM,if you're a Rosie fan.

The 280, 280Imp, 284 Win, 7-08 and the 7-08Imp would also work great. Get what you want and enjoy. What bullets and optics are you considering for this rifle?

My opinion is to go with the 7mm Rem Mag because it will take an animal cleanly and quickly at 500 yards. I personally think that beyond 400 yards the standard 7mm-08 is stretching it a bit, although not entirely out of the question, it's just stretching it's capabilities. My only fret is you seemed to be afraid of recoil. A 7mm Rem Mag will be very hard on the shoulder at the bench using premium slow burning rounds. But that's only at the bench, you won't notice it out in the field but you probably already know that. In summary, I think you should get the 7mm Rem Mag, use premium rounds, get ready to feel the pain at the range and keep practicing until the pain doesn't matter any more. I just wouldn't have confidence shooting a 7mm-08 beyond 400 yards personally.

No, I'm not recoil sensitive. I mentioned the RUM maybee having too much recoil only in that it may have more barrel jump or recoil in order to MOA accuracy. My old 7 Rem. wich I had loaded pretty hot I could consistantly shoot 5 shot groups at 100 yrds that I could cover with quarter. Never really shot paper at farther than that. But with that rifle I killed two elk, one at 350 and one right at 300, both one shot drop in their tracks shots. My only reasoning behind the RUM would be a flatter trajectory. Maybe it's not enough to consider. The thinking behind the WSM is the so called potential better acurracy with a shorter action, meaning less twisting or deforming at the time of the shot, again I don't know if there is enough potential there to worry about??? I now prefer to hunt elk with a bow but the idea of hunting pronghorn and desert deer with something that can reach out there is very intrieging. As far as what I'm going to put on top of it...I'm not sure yet. I do know I want some quality glass with a compisating turret on top. I do hand load my own, so that is a plus.

Although I'm a big fan of the good old 7mm Rem mag, my buddy Ric makes a good case for the 7mm WSM. Here's an article done on his long range hunting rifle: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek064.htmlAnother buddy is using a custom built 7mm WSM with 180 gr match bullets and it is remarkably accurate. Know your rifle. Know your load. Know your scope. You'll take game cleanly with any of the 7's at longish ranges. Good luck, Guy

Maybe it is the rifle it came to me in, but I have had ultra good luck getting a 7 STW to shoot tiny groups. I have only played with 4 rifles, all have been Remington Sendero`s, but all have shot extremely well.
