I have decided to get me a 7mm. I do miss my old one I sold. frown
But since then there has been added cartrages to the "magnificent 7"
So what is better 7 Ultra, 7 Rem, 7 STW or 7 WSM. Right now I'm looking at the 7 Rem or 7 WSM. I do want to use it to take anlimals out to 500 yrds. Deer and pronghorn. I think the Ultra would have too much recoil, but I don't know.
So, tell me what you think. smile

The 280 is awfully impressive.

What's with the Magnumitis? At 500 yard you ain't gonna be on the hair, no matter how super duper your 7 is.

If you've got to have a magnum, get the 7 remmy. A .280 would get it done also and give you a couple of extra rounds in the magazine.

I grow up with 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm X 57, and the 7mm Weatherby.

I look at the new crop of 7mm rounds, the STW, Short Mags, I just dont see an advantage in the 7mm category.

The 280 is alright, I own a 7mm Mauser and like it, but the 7mm Remington Magnum is a go to round, its been working its magic for years.

Think .280 Ackley Improved if your looking at a custom rifle and you handload.

If you're not gonna roll your own go 7MM Remington Magnum.

It depends on the kind of hunting you plan on using it for. I have all of the above mentioned calibers except the RUM. If it was my only big game rifle to be used to hunt deer to moose I'd go with the STW or RUM. They would give greater range with the heavier bullets for plenty of penetration.

If I was looking for a short, lightweight rig for for deer and sheep, the WSM offers advantages over the others. While a lot of people proclaim the WSM doesn't do anything the others won't, they are correct. It sends a bullet of the same weight, at around the same velocity. But the rifles they can be chambered in can be an advantage if your hunting takes you where the air is thin and the mountains are steep.

JMO but I would go with a 26in barrel and go with the 7mmRemmy. This a all the gun you will need for all north american game. Put a high bc bullet and 500 will be no problem. Even a TSX will get out there super. HAPPY HUNTING

To me you have to look into the ease of finding ammo if you don't reload. I have rarely seen 7STW anywhere and 7mm rem and the WSM ammo are easily found. This is a big part why I don't try to buy the harder to find things. JMO HAPPY HUNTING

Me, I'd get the 7 Rem Mag, which I continue to use, with the STW as second. Only because I think the STW works best with 26" of barrel, and I want 24 in a general purpose rifle.

Not a thing wrong with the 7 WSM,if you're a Rosie fan.

NB,
For deer and antelope out to 500 yards, I would go with one of the two lesser you posted. All will do the job easily when set-up correctly.
The 280, 280Imp, 284 Win, 7-08 and the 7-08Imp would also work great.
Get what you want and enjoy.
What bullets and optics are you considering for this rifle?

My opinion is to go with the 7mm Rem Mag because it will take an animal cleanly and quickly at 500 yards. I personally think that beyond 400 yards the standard 7mm-08 is stretching it a bit, although not entirely out of the question, it's just stretching it's capabilities. My only fret is you seemed to be afraid of recoil. A 7mm Rem Mag will be very hard on the shoulder at the bench using premium slow burning rounds. But that's only at the bench, you won't notice it out in the field but you probably already know that. In summary, I think you should get the 7mm Rem Mag, use premium rounds, get ready to feel the pain at the range and keep practicing until the pain doesn't matter any more. I just wouldn't have confidence shooting a 7mm-08 beyond 400 yards personally.

No, I'm not recoil sensitive. I mentioned the RUM maybee having too much recoil only in that it may have more barrel jump or recoil in order to MOA accuracy. My old 7 Rem. wich I had loaded pretty hot I could consistantly shoot 5 shot groups at 100 yrds that I could cover with quarter. Never really shot paper at farther than that. But with that rifle I killed two elk, one at 350 and one right at 300, both one shot drop in their tracks shots.
My only reasoning behind the RUM would be a flatter trajectory. Maybe it's not enough to consider. The thinking behind the WSM is the so called potential better acurracy with a shorter action, meaning less twisting or deforming at the time of the shot, again I don't know if there is enough potential there to worry about???
I now prefer to hunt elk with a bow but the idea of hunting pronghorn and desert deer with something that can reach out there is very intrieging.
As far as what I'm going to put on top of it...I'm not sure yet. I do know I want some quality glass with a compisating turret on top.
I do hand load my own, so that is a plus.

Although I'm a big fan of the good old 7mm Rem mag, my buddy Ric makes a good case for the 7mm WSM. Here's an article done on his long range hunting rifle:

http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek064.html

Another buddy is using a custom built 7mm WSM with 180 gr match bullets and it is remarkably accurate.

Know your rifle. Know your load. Know your scope. You'll take game cleanly with any of the 7's at longish ranges.

Good luck, Guy

Maybe it is the rifle it came to me in, but I have had ultra good luck getting a 7 STW to shoot tiny groups. I have only played with 4 rifles, all have been Remington Sendero`s, but all have shot extremely well.

While the 7mm Ultra and STW have impressive ballistics, my preference would be the use of a 24-inch barrel rifle. In that 24-inch barrel class, the 7mm Rem Mag has impressive ballistics and is one of my favorites. I honestly believe the 270 Wby is just as impressive and I almost purchased one years ago prior to the 7mm Rem Mag.

Sounds like you need a 7MM Sharpe and Hart. Best of both worlds. Also, if the recoil of a 7 Rem Mag is PAINFUL your stock doesn't fit. Period.

I own 280's & 7 Wby's. One will pretty much do what the other will. I just happen to love my 7 Wby. I took my larget whitetail buck with my 280 Encore last year.

280 Rem, 280 Imp, 7 Rem Mag, 7 Wby will do all you want to do. Pick one and be happy.

I won a Sako 7MM UltraMag & am interested in trying out the cartridge. I would never have purchased the rifle in this cal. since I have a 300 Win.Mag.,257 Weatherby, 7MM Gibbs,& 280. The RUM can be used for bullets up to 160G. so it could be used as a "One Gun" for African plains game. But, thats not much fun.

NB,
I have cleanly taken deer/antelope with the ranges you prescribe with the cartridges I mentioned earlier. The 7-08 may be on the lighter side but it has done well for me in the 4-500 yd ranges on deer/antelope-5 animals come to mind. The 280/284 Win class cartridges on up will give you more fudge factor. Personal preferences would be the 284 Win, 7WSM and the 7mm Dakota.

I really chopped up the above post, just so that's clear...

That said, the 7mm Rem Mag's recoil cannot possibly be as bad as you say. I've never fired one, somehow, but I shoot a few heavier calibers and the recoil of THOSE is not as you describe! Don't freak him out for no good reason... for some people, a 7 mag is an absolute powder puff.

I love the 7RM but if I were going to buy another 7 for long range work, that means I would probably shoot a lot. Which means belted cases are out due to case life. I'd go 7WSM.

laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh That is one of the most humorous posts that I have ever read.Having owned three 7mmremmags and three 7mmstw rifles,I found all to be quite manageable, certainly not at all "hard on the shoulder".Now if you were 100 lbs,the recoil might be substantial to you.

Do you only sell "junk" and keep the good stuff ? Just kidding-I couldn't resist it !It is a fair question .

I just retired from work the first of the year . I'm trying to simplify my life . Got a 6mm AI for a walk-about W.T.rifle . Got a 257 wby in Mark V with syn stock for bad weather and West Tex M.D. [jeep] hunting .Got another No. 1 in 270 wby that I bought as a donor a couple years ago but it is a tackdriver so I put a $300 set trigger on it and it has become my favorite .Got a really good shooting 338 Ultra that don't get used enough .

Maybe the main reason ? I put a euro Swaro on the 257 and an AV swaro on the 270 . I just kind of gravitate to one of them . With my reduced income [read broke!] status , I can't put a swaro on the 7 Ultra !

If you want to find the thread in the classifieds , you will see I didn't try REAL hard to sell it ! When I saw this thread , it seemed the poster might could use it . Hate to see something this good go un-used .

I've had 7 rem mags and still think it is the best choice for a one rifle guy . Had to smile at the recoil comment .Had a 7 STW . I figured [ rightly ] that the Ultra w/ long barrel might let me use RL 25 instead of RL 22 which is as slow as I could go in the 300 Ultra, 338 ultra ,and STW .

If I'd of had a good shooting STW , I wouldn't have traded it for an Ultra just to get the extra whiz . Truth is that one will basically do what the other will as far as hunting .

Don't worry about recoil with the 7mm Ultra. I have used one in a Sendero extensivly and it will definitely get the job done without excessive recoil. An STW will do just as well. My longest kills have been with the 7mm Ultra on both Mule Deer and Whitetail across canyons in the west and beanfields in the east. If you are looking for a 7mm give both catridges a close look. If you can arrange to shoot one it would be even better.

ACtually FWIW smaller folks tend to deal with recoil much easier than larger folks. ITs the largest folks I"ve dealt with that squeal the most..... Have a big ex college football player now a local PT.... had to put a brake on his 338 win mag... I'd worked all the loads and ammo and etc.... up with nothing more than a rest.... no past or anything.....

But to say a 7 rem mag kicks.... wow, go try a 378 wtby some day.....

if your handloading i would vote the 280AI. or the 284. depending on the platform. no need for more @500. if you can hit it it will die. if the bullet is going faster it wont make a spit bit of difference at that distance.

if you need drug store ammo availability i would vote the 7mag. more than enough and everywhere.... JMO

i would think a TI wearin' a #2 or 3 @24" would be perfect wand in a AI... or a in the short guise a 284 off the factory 7-08 would work if funds were tight.....

just thinkin' out loud....

I picked up a new 7RUM in a 700 CDL and mounted a 4-12X50mm Swarovski with Talleys.
I will be very curious to see how she shoots with the 160gr accubond and retumbo.

No thanks!

Getting kicked really hard is NOT a good thing, for me, at least. It takes me a while to get back into form without a flinch.

.338 WIn Mag is not "really hard" for me, BTW... I mean things like my 3.5" 12 ga turkey gun... or my 45/70 loaded really hot...

Ditto, ditto, and ditto!

Only 7mm's I'd consider shooting are the .280R, 7mm-08, 7mmRM and 7X57 - in that order.

If you're shooting mostly deer-size critters or black bear, ignore the mangle-ums. But if you were looking for a 'elk rifle' (to also use on similar-size game), then get the 7 Rem Mag.

I might consider a 7WSM if I was so-inclined - and absolutely had to have a shortie-action.

That really depends on your blue print. My 7 Rem mag is much softer than my 270 Win. I even shoot prairie dogs with it.

That depends on the cartridge, the bullet, the sight in,and the animal. If you are shooting my 7mmstw,shooting the 140gr accubond at 3500fps,a sight in of 2-3/4" high results in a point of impact of 18" low at 500 yards.Shooting the 7mmultramag with the same bullet at 3570fps with a sight in of 3" high at 100 yards, will result in a point of impact of less than 16" low.Either will produce a killing shot on a moose or even a large bull elk by holding on the top of the back(still on hair) at 500 yards.
