Anybody have experience with 168 tipped match kings on deer @300win mag velocities? I’ve got an old 40x that I’m thinking of taking out to hunt this fall. The only load I’ve worked up for it thus far is 230 Berger vld’s. But those are unavailable at this time. Also found some 212 hornady eldx but I’d like a little lighter bullet to help reduce recoil. Sierra says the match kings have thicker jackets…. I could see that helping hold them together at closer range but could also see it hurting their expansion at long range. Thx in advance.

Caught this guy running away at 200 yards with a 125 gr Nos Bal Tip in a 300 win mag Mosin with Krieger barrel.

He did not get another step.

Nosler 165 and 180 Accubonds are the perfect bullet for the 300 Win Mag IMO.... and you can usually get them from Nosler or retailers fairly regularly now that supply is starting to catch up...

Not tipped MKs, but I’ve shot a couple of deer and seen several shot with 168 Match HPBTs from a .300. Worked fine on lung and neck shots from 80 to 350 or so. I recall reading that a famous riflemaker from Tucson used 168 SMKs in his .300 Weatherby for Coues, and he killed a bunch of big ones.
I would guess that the plastic tip would only enhance performance.
Fwiw, any time I carry a .300 lately, it’s throwing 200-grain Accubonds.
Best,

Calvin Coolidge had a very low post count too.

+1 👍

The Barnes 212 gr merits consideration in a 1:8”, if they can be found.

The 200 AccuBomb has a G7 Litz BC of .268 and simply pales to a 22" 7-08 and a 180 ELD M at 2600fps. Hint.

300Winny/200AB/2980fps. Hint.

22" 7-08/180 ELD/2600fps. 1000ft lbs to 1000yds and SuperSonic to 1500yds++. Hint.

Just sayin'.

Hint.

Bless your hearts.

No on the Matchkings, those old 40X's are pretty heavy, 200+ grain bullets shouldn't kick bad in that beast, i've used in my 28" barreled 300 Win Mag:

208gr AMax 3000 fps
210gr ABLR 3000 fps
230gr Berger 2876 fps

a few deer, pigs and coyotes from around 440 to 688 yards have all died fast with all three bullets, Retumbo is the powder for that rifle, COL's run 3.625-3.675"

HARD to comprehend, bullets matter more than headstamps. I was a slow convert, but have seen the light! 180g ELD-M at 2700 out of the lowly 280, R#17....jeez...no one would believe it!

Have you taken any game with the 180 yet? I just worked up a load for my 18" fieldcraft 7-08 with the 180s running a bit over 2500fps. It's now shooting them under 1/2 moa. They should hold up on game at these speeds.

I tried 6.5 staball first and got up to 2600 fps but the accuracy and consistency wasn't there. A few days ago I went to H4350 because it's worked well in other 7-08s with 162 amaxes. It's shooting them great now.

I always swore to myself that if I had a large 30, id shoot 200 accubonds. Well, I just got a 300 win mag, and now have a pile of Nosler boxes on my reloading bench.

Fascinating. Hint.

What makes someone "think" that a 300 Winny with a 200 AccuBomb is "good" for Long Range...or ANYTHING else? Do tell, mainly because it will be funnier than fhuqk! Hint.

The 220 Scenar and 212 ELD's aren't horrible either. Maybe not the top of the heap BC wise, they work well.

The 200 Accubond is a good bullet but I think it's a bit tough at around 2000 FPS from a 1-10 twist, 1-8 seems to make it act a bit better on animals.

Match kings are meant for matches like target shooting.
Game kings are made for killing game.
I’m sure the TMK will work, but I’d be looking at 180 TGK instead.

I shot a cow elk this year with 180 game kings out of 06. 2800+ FPS. She was at 75ish yards . It was high center shot as she was trotting. Found the bullet on opposite side. Opened to .760 inches and weighed in at 122 gr.

Draw your own conclusions what match king at magnum velocity will do at close range

When II had my 300 Win Mag it was 200gr Sierra Game Kings but that was 40 yrs ago and that and the 200gr Partitions were the only game in town.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I settled on the 200gr nosler partition, when I was hunting my 300wm exclusively. Ran those about 2,900 fps and they worked well.. Now I run that same bullet in my 30-06 rifles at a mundane speed of about 2,700 fps.. They penetrate very well though, and are extremely accurate..

This buck fell to a 200gr partition from my 300wm. Great combo back then. Now days, I would still run that, or maybe think about switching to a TTSX or LRX. IF they shoot well.

I have some of the 168 TMKs and 175 TMKs for practice. For deer, I don't see why they wouldn't work, though they may be very destructive. I have always felt that the tiny open tip on straight Match bullets created the odd problems, i.e. pencil through or blow up on the surface. I think that tip over a bigger hollow point with be more consistent. Heck they should work swell on coyotes too! I will try the 168s in a 308 and the 175s as a practice sub for my 175 LRX.
