if your handloading i would vote the 280AI. or the 284. depending on the platform. no need for more @500. if you can hit it it will die. if the bullet is going faster it wont make a spit bit of difference at that distance.
if you need drug store ammo availability i would vote the 7mag. more than enough and everywhere.... JMO
i would think a TI wearin' a #2 or 3 @24" would be perfect wand in a AI... or a in the short guise a 284 off the factory 7-08 would work if funds were tight.....
just thinkin' out loud....

I picked up a new 7RUM in a 700 CDL and mounted a 4-12X50mm Swarovski with Talleys. I will be very curious to see how she shoots with the 160gr accubond and retumbo.

No thanks!
Getting kicked really hard is NOT a good thing, for me, at least. It takes me a while to get back into form without a flinch.
.338 WIn Mag is not "really hard" for me, BTW... I mean things like my 3.5" 12 ga turkey gun... or my 45/70 loaded really hot...

The 280 is awfully impressive.
What's with the Magnumitis? At 500 yard you ain't gonna be on the hair, no matter how super duper your 7 is. Ditto, ditto, and ditto! Only 7mm's I'd consider shooting are the .280R, 7mm-08, 7mmRM and 7X57 - in that order. If you're shooting mostly deer-size critters or black bear, ignore the mangle-ums. But if you were looking for a 'elk rifle' (to also use on similar-size game), then get the 7 Rem Mag. I might consider a 7WSM if I was so-inclined - and absolutely had to have a shortie-action.

A 7mm Rem Mag will be very hard on the shoulder at the bench using premium slow burning rounds. That really depends on your blue print. My 7 Rem mag is much softer than my 270 Win. I even shoot prairie dogs with it.

What's with the Magnumitis? At 500 yard you ain't gonna be on the hair, no matter how super duper your 7 is. That depends on the cartridge, the bullet, the sight in,and the animal. If you are shooting my 7mmstw,shooting the 140gr accubond at 3500fps,a sight in of 2-3/4" high results in a point of impact of 18" low at 500 yards.Shooting the 7mmultramag with the same bullet at 3570fps with a sight in of 3" high at 100 yards, will result in a point of impact of less than 16" low.Either will produce a killing shot on a moose or even a large bull elk by holding on the top of the back(still on hair) at 500 yards.

I sight in a 150 grain 3 high at 100 with my STW.Point and shoot at all ranges has worked thus far.Large clear cuts and powerlines were the reason I built the STW.
