I killed a huge 5x5 bull elk on the downhill side woulda had a bigger rack a year before when someone buried a 50 cal hollow point muzzle loader bullet in a rib just behind the shoulder.

I missed a wolf in the fog while hunting caribou in AK. He was sitting on the river-bank ~125-150yds from camp. I was sure I'd ranged the point he was on @ 300yds the day before. I should've known better because you couldn't see 300yds and it was too foggy for the LRF to pick him up.
I can walk on water.......................but I do stagger a bit on alcohol.
Not a year or two earlier...but about 16 hours earlier.
Found a nice muley last year but was definitely in the "cull" buck class. Heavy, 26", good tops but crabbed a little on his fronts. He was a big bodied deer and likely old given his pot belly and overall body mass. Public ground so can't really "farm" them but we try to only take what we are looking for or mature cull bucks. Watched him all evening and at dinner talked ourselves into killing him the next morning. Found him early and were making a play when two guys showed up in the area and apparently spotted him about the same time. We attacked the mountain from different angles and they got him, we didn't. We had been hunting the drainage for days. They had hunted less then 15 minutes when they first spotted him.
Not a huge deal as I have killed better bucks but still frustrating when you put in the time. Should have killed him the night before but we thought the weather and drifts had everyone else locked out of the area and we were holding out for something exceptional.
I let a couple really nice bucks walk a few different times, because I was after bigger ones that I just knew were going to come by me at any moment. I saw them on a game camera, so I knew they were all but on my wall. I guess somebody forgot to inform the bigger bucks.
I chased a huge old buck around for 2 years. The first time I saw him I'd already punched my buck tag and I was out looking for a doe or spike to put my antlerless tag on. I saw him a half dozen times often at 20 feet or less and couldn't shoot him that year. His antlers were incredibly heavy but "slick", slightly palmated, and I think already on the decline. I saw what I believe where his tracks and rubs the next year but never saw him. Didn't hunt there the 3rd year.
The 4th year my aunt shot him. I packed him out for her. By that time his rack was about the width and height of a smaller than medium forked horn but the mass was incredible, heavily palmated .. like a mini-moose .. and his body was massive. His teeth were worn flat .. guessing he wouldn't have made it through the winter. That was the last deer my aunt shot. She's 86 now, can't hardly walk. Though I wanted him, I'm glad she's the one that got him.
