100grNP: I consider myself a great Smith & Wesson "Enthusiast" - not an "Expert!
Having said that I am also a great fan and minor collector of the Model 686.
I have a bunch of them including the two latest editions of 686's I have purchased here in the somewhat "depressed" gun value area of SW Montana.
They are:

#1: 686-1 in all original and near mint condition with 6" barrel - my hand written receipt (gunshow purchase? I forget) from November of 2,020 shows I paid $600.00 cash. I considered that a "near" steal at the time!
#2: 686-0 in all original and near mint condition with 8 3/8" barrel - my receipt from Schnee's in Bozeman, Montana in January of 2,021 shows I paid $650.00 cash for it. I consider that an absolute STEAL! It was consigned there.

Remembering the high price of replacement of the original grips on the 8 3/8" 686-3 in question I would venture a WAG as to its value at close to $1,000.00 (one thousand dollars) - add $100.00 if paperless transaction (buying or selling).
If it has the "hillary hole" (key locking system) then deduct $300.00 to $400.00.
I am not sure if the 686-3 is the "hillary hole" model or not?
Good luck with your "dealing" (are you buying or selling?).

A friend of mines father in law recently passed away and I may or may not get the 1st shot at it. I sure wish it was a 6" version.

The -3 is a good one, did you notice if it had the standard front sight or the metallic silhouette version? the MS front sight is fairly rare and commands a higher price (in certain circles. The 8 3/8' is heavy as a brick but most were very accurate. One recently came up in a LGS and never made it to the shelf.I think it went for over $1200 it did have the box and paperwork.

In 1996 I bought a 686 for $400 and sold it for what I paid.

That might have been a mistake to sell.
