i used to hunt antlers, but ever since a had a bad stroke (right arm/leg are kaput), i am a meat hunter. i don't shoot fawns or under 2yo deer, there is not much meat on them. i'll shoot an average size (140-150lbs) or above buck or doe. since i already have 2 doe in the freezer, i am set. i have 2 more doe tags and a buck tag that i'll probably eat.

My son got the meat the first day so I ended up eating my landowner tag.

Colorado elk tag soup is delicious with just salt and pepper and a shot of bourbon to simmer it in. Sometimes I make a double batch when I'm really hungry.
I've eaten alot of tags over the years. In the early years it felt like failure but after shooting my share of game, it is part of the game and happens. Some times it's self inflicted, some times pure effort does not produce a result. I've done both and find both acceptable.
I've also had years that I scored early and wish I could hunt longer - happened this year in deer season. I was done by Weds and spent the rest of the week scouting and hanging out because we all filled our tags early this year.
Any way I have several deer to go with my Colorado tag soup. I think a deer tenderloin will go good with tag soup. I wonder if Eileen has a good tag soup recipe?
