I could never live in bear country because I couldn't trust myself to not kill them on sight. Same for wolves. I think I was born 100 years too late. People used to know how to handle predators.
There is that instinct.

Man reading this you would think they are dangerous.
Really need to watch for lightning bolts though. They will get you first.
And moose. Watch moose.
Bears.. Meh. Its like a plane. Damn safe. Unless you are on the one that crashes. But the crashes are so rare on the big planes doing normal stuff( IE not bush planes and off airport, though one of my bosses flew 21 years IIRC before he was in a crash)
Bears I respect. Pay attention to. Watch. But there are so many other things in life to actually worry about.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Its fallacy that 100 years ago every wolf or bear was shot on sight. Shot as needed. But not everyone was shot.

I suppose it's a fallacy that gray wolves were eradicated from the lower 48? California grizzlies? You're talking out your ass.
There's crazy videos of archers being bothered by curious bears, whacking at them with their bows. A guy I knew talked about whacking at a grizzly trying to get in the boat with them with his fly rod. Black bears are all over Asheville, NC in my son's backyard. Like a big possum maybe. He's too casual about them to my mind. They have gone inside the neighbor's house. That's not ok.

+1
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Iif I go to Africa I would want to bring one of the more powerful revolvers like the S&W 500. Would this class of revolver be better for defense against big bears?

Conrad, logically thinking, that would probably be a pretty good choice. But remember, as I have been admonished, almost all bears run.
Well, once when I only had a bow on an elk hunt in Colorado, a bleck bare on a huge cow it had , killed on the only trail back toward camp out of a steep walled canyon near dark, letting me know not to approach its prize any closer. It stood up on seeing me and started popping teeth and saying E,E,E,E,E real rapidly like a machine gun going rat,tat,ta,ta...
I fed it an arrow from 25 yds and it came for me. Muzzy 90 gr 4 blade, old style. By the Grace of God it went down 10 yards from me and I got video of it kicking and giving its death moan.
That brought the BIG BEAR coming my way. I knocked another arrow and was kind of pretty much nervous as it was coming from the weeds. I was wishing I had a pistol such as you described as I had already made my perfect shot of the hunt. I made a bad shot that hit it at the lateral edge of the zygomatic arch (temporal aspect of its left eye orbit) and glanced off a bit to the side. Luckily that arrow had a luminock and I saw what had happened. At that point I grabbed a small S&Wesson hand hatchet in my right hand and held the bow high in my left hand and shaking it and screaming my best ever, the bear turned to leave slowly and begrudgingly. It went a few steps and turned to come again but my screaming and bow shaking went into overdrive and it turned and started moving away again.
PTL the farther it went the faster it went. I felt I was floating on air. It was getting dark and I needed to head to camp but I forced myself to sir on a log and calm down a bit to hopefully prevent a heart attack.
Yep, from that point on carried a gun. I learned that some bears will not run.
