There are 2 rifles chambered in 25 WSSM that I have wanted, but never found a deal where the condition and price were in sync. A Browning TI Mountain Rifle and a Cooper Varmint gun.

I like the Federal brass better than the Winchester/Olin because the necks aren't as thick and don't split like the Winchester/Olin is prone to do.

…….ouch that just hurt - a geezer at 59!!

I like to think that .250 Savage and .257 Roberts people just recognized the .243 never needed born😁

I've never seen Federal brass in 25 WSSM. So far I've had good luck with the Winchester cases. I bought the Cooper chiefly because I liked the wood.

Federal only made WSSM brass in 223 and 243, but it only takes a little Imperial Wax to turn the 243 WSSM brass into 25 WSSM brass. For four or five years took four different Winchester/USRA 70 WSSM rifles on pdog safaris and over that time fired around 7,000 rounds at those exploding pop-up targets using 75 grain VMax and Sierra HPs.

Might also mention that I got done writing the chapter on the .250-3000 Savage in my latest book, THE LITTLE BOOK OF RIFLE HANDLOADS THAT WORK, and discovered I've owned around 15 rifles in .250 over the years, from early 1899s to synthetic-stocked bolt rifles. So evidently am indeed a geezer, the reason I could make my comment without guilt.

Started the .257 Roberts chapter today, and found I've only owned around 15...

22 inch barrel?

As with all our books, we're planning on some time early fall--though that "plan" has varied from September to November!

23" at first as I figure the case should hold about one more grain of powder with a seated bullet which hopefully should equate to the Roberts with a 24" barrel when seated way out.

Riflehunter,

Well, about that....

But so what?\

have you shot enough big game with various .25 caliber cartrudges, using 100-120 grain bullets, to perceive ANY difference in "killing power"?

I'm thinking the .257 110 grain bullet at around 3100 fps should be a little better than the 90 grain .243 at similar speeds, a little better than the 100 grain .243 at around 2950 fps, and more of a multi-purpose round (for smaller game as well as medium game) than the 140 grain .270/7mm at around 3000 fps. And as you know there really is not much difference in killing power between them (and that doesn't stop us from trying different cartridges)...however, there is a slight difference, if there were not, then you may as well use a .223 as opposed to a .375 on very large game. I think the differences in 'killing power" between the various .25's sometimes becomes apparent at the margin. By this I mean if you are shooting 350 yards, a .25-06 may be a bit better than a less powerful .25. Also if you are shooting a 300 lb mule deer, a slightly more powerful .25 may be a little better than a less powerful .25.

Must be an echo here , Ha

Shoulder diameter on the CM case is .462” , while the AIs being wildcats vary, but generally the ones I’ve measured go up to .454”, so ~.008” larger shoulder diameter. Very little taper in the CM

Does that volume difference offset the reduction in shoulder angle ?
Too close for me to guesstimate without delving into some trigonometric voodoo

Ok, now that’s getting pedantic

I hope you saved room for the Better Bob and Standard 280

John has promised not to get bogged down with the most popular loadings like 30’06 and 7 Mag , which are thoroughly covered in the much weightier Gack series .

Some of us prefer the Loony Side of Loading, Ha

John do you have to be so harsh? 😁. Can we preorder the new book? Thanks.
