A cave, now there's a new one to me. Hey guys great pics, I will try to get a current pick of my new shanty this weekend while I'm out there. Hey gristle, poplar huh? interesting, and you put the boards on green? did you go board & batton style overlap so board shrinkage wouldn't matter? Very cool. I'd like to do the inside of mine with sawmill boards, a friend of mine has a nice band saw mill & I have timber, all I need is the time BTW, "quality doe management" that cracks me up. RWL99, I see a few things I'd like to learn about for my own interest in possibly doing the same for my shack. first off though, what a treasure!! Cabin like that in the UP? and tamarack logs too? that thing will be there for ever!! The plywood type boards leaning on the outside of the shack, is that to keep birds & such from flying through the glass tree branches in storms, critters in general? I could see that being very good if it's a place that sits empty for long periods of time. then the pegs on the outside, must be for hanging rifles up for mid day returns from hunting so you don't have to fog scopes & create moisture by bringing them inside? Great pictures, hope to see some more posted. Dave

Great pics. Man this is starting to get me fired up. I love the rifles too. You gotta have rifles in a good deer camp pic.

Yep , it's just one of those magnetic thermometers . Red too hot , grey too cold . Judging by the smoke in my first pic , the stove was checked down too much and running too cold. Phil

red too hot, grey too cold, gotcha, is it made for that purpose or is it an improvised device?
If it is made & sold for that purpose, I'd like to have one, were could I get one?

First google search turned up this http://www.condar.com/meters.html I think any stove place would have them as well as some of the back country hardware stores. Phil

Dad calls it a cabin, I dont know if I agree. Really easy spending time up there. Wish it had a wood burning stove though. I keep telling dad we need to add a room to it so we can put a stove in it. I have a wood burning cook stove dated 1884 that I would love to put in there.

that would be cool, especially if you didn't have to rely on it for all of your heat, you could just use the wood stove to heat it when it was convenient to do so & let your other heat be it elect or gas do the work at night or while you are away hunting during the day.

He has electic baseboard heater in the bedroom and gas heat for the mainroom, would just be cool to cook on and stuff. It has an oven too, would be nice to keep stew/soups warm while you were out hunting. Things just taste a little better when cooked on a wood stove.

I hope to have some this weekend for you Dave. I'm leaving as soon as I can fake an illness and get out of work. Most likely it won't be until late though
Camp is where you make it.
