My buddy was a medic in Vietnam, he got called home when his father died, (only son). He wanted badly to bring a 1911 home.

Had to stand in formation with his duffle bag open. Guy walked up and down the line and just tapped the top of the open bag.

I had a stack of paperwork nearly 1" thick to get a Russian made sniper rifle through both military and US customs @ Travis AFB. No problems getting out of country or from Okinawa. I was stopped while openly hand carrying (no case) it through San Fran airport at least a dozen times by local LE. When actually boarding the plane to fly home, the Captain of the plane greeted me with a smile and asked about the previous owner, I told him he hadn't been a very good shot.
