Just recently got a whitworth 458 win mag. It's from the collection someone posted about earlier that was at a shop in Nevada and listed on gbroker. Gun is much better than the auction pics. Appears to me to be unfired. Adjusted the trigger up and its really nice now.

Anyhow. Where do yall get brass for reloading at? I'm not looking at any kind of expensive nosler or anything. Just some once fired preferably to load up for some Texas pigs.

It would take some digging but I have some I’d sell. I have been busy with remodeling and haven’t unpacked the reloading stuff yet.

Tough to find any brass lately, even for the most useful rifle ever, the .458 Win. Magnum.
But it is also easiest to make brass for from multiple other types, like
.458 Lott
.416 Rem. Magnum
.375 H&H
and many more.
Taking a mini chop saw to .458 Lott brass is especially satisfying.

.338 WinMag brass necks up OK but comes out a little short.
OK in a pinch.
I have not tried it, but simply firing a .300 WinMag round in the .458 WinMag chamber to blow it out before trimming might work.

For now, sign up at MidwayUSA and anywhere else you can on wishlist for when brass becomes available.
It will be gone within 24 hours so you have to be ready to pounce pronto when it comes in.
Hornady, Winchester, and RP brass of yore are interchangeable in load data.
Norma brass is about 4.5 grains water greater in internal capacity.
I never measured Federal brass from fired factory loads but need to do that.
It's all good.

When I talked to the shop, they told me that many were "unfired". They were all beautiful examples as well. Nice wood grain and in like new condition. They also have some cheaper (much cheaper) ones there in plastic stocks. I damn near bought one (458WM) for $400.00 and another for $349.00. That one was chambered in 8mm mauser. . I also know where there is some brass at a shop as well, and some loaded ammo that I'd have to pull apart. Good luck with finding brass. You may get lucky if you ask in the classifieds here. Someone may have a stash of it and willing to help you out. It would be cool if you posted some pics of the rifle, as I started a thread about those rifles. The shop bought 164 rifles from one individual. There were also some nice scopes there too, that came off of some of these rifles. Some Burris 1-4's and Leupold 1.5-5's. The day I was there, I ended up buying 2 Leupold scopes there that I can almost triple my money on. Giving up some of my secrets though.

Yes I can get some better pic of the rifle this coming week. The wood was dry and the metal dry but it still had cosmoline like substance on it. I took it out of the stock and it does have the second stud and bedding on it so I undertand that to be a good thing. couple coats of howard's on the stock and balistol on all the metal and but pad and it looks brand new now. I had to tighten up the front sight hood. That was about the only issue with it.

I had a most lovely .458 WinMag Whitworth.











Factory wood was great right out of the box, but the bedding needed a little strengthening.
Added a hidden cross bolt in the forend to back up the excellent recoil lug on the barrel,
and a hidden cross bolt in the web between the magazine and trigger wells.
No pillars, just the usual steel spacers like a Mauser 98.
It shot well but seems to have had some chatter or chips in the factory chamber reaming.
Pretty serious chamber rings that would not polish out, so it was re-chambered
using a .416 Ruger reamer with a pilot for the .458 barrel.
Voila ! .458/.416 Ruger aka the .458 Win Ruger.
Only 2 will fit in the Whitworth box that holds 3 in .458 WinMag.

I have not fixed that yet.
Could replace the barrel, back to .458 WinMag,
or modify the magazine box by windowing it,
replace it with a drop box,
or just a deeper floor plate to get an extra 0.1" depth of pocket plate, that's all it would take.
Too many .458 WinMag projects still ahead of it.
Wonderful rifles those Whitworths.

The .458 WinMag is not opened forward like the .375 H&H Whitworth.
Some might consider the .458 WinMag Whitworth to have a stronger action,
capable of handling greater pressures than the .375 H&H Whitworth.

Here's how I built up the stock strength:

I prefer the .458 WinMag.
It will probably still be around after all the rest are gone and all we have to hunt is cockroaches.
Shot loads from the .458 WinMag are adequate for that at close range.

Thanks for all the info. That a heck of a piece of wood you have on that rifle. Can you provide some more info on the hidden cross bolts? Is this necessary? where do you get them and how do you install them? I dont want to crack this stock? I also dont plan to shoot this that much either it has the two bedding right now

Brownells has 458 Lott brass by Hornady in stock now. It can be trimmed to needed length without too much aggravation.

The hidden cross bolt is just a piece of steel all-thread from the hardware store, 1/4" diameter is thick enough, but I have used up to 3/8" diameter.
If you have the exposed second cross bolt between magazine well and trigger well, no need there.
The hidden cross bolt backing up the barrel lug may be overkill, but it is such an easy thing to do, why not do it ?
I also had my original recoil pad replaced with a black Decelerator.

The plastic stocked ones looks like the old RamLine stocks from the last century.
Those do take to glass bedding well, and if you fill the hollow butt with sprayed-in foam it makes them quieter to beat around with in the woods.
I would take any of those, walnut or no, if chambered in .458 Win. Magnum.

You are welcome. I agree, they are all nice rifles. You are correct in that the stocks on the 458's do look like Ramline. They are definitely serviceable with a little work. Man, the bores on those rifles are like new!!!!! I thought about it and thought about it and decided to go home without any of them. I bought a nice rifle at a different gunshop earlier that day. I don't know what stock the 30-06 had on it though???
