Huskie or Stihl?
Replacing one I took back to Home Depot, just for trimming around the property......
The Home Depot one was the biggest model they carried locally, a Ryobi... with a "three year warranty" and they also tried to sell me an additional two years warranty extension... I had purchased it back in 2021, because with a yard full of trees, stuff would eventually happen...so I finally need to use it when an entire tree came down and took out 10 feet of the neighbor's fence... It ran 3 tanks of gas and then wouldn't start again..
and yeah it had 100 octane fuel, with a 50/50 mix etc... in it...would only replace it...
They NO LONGER work on them at the store... only on rental equipment... they gave me a list of 3 places in Oregon that would repair it... but it was my bite to get it to the shops and returned home... each 250 miles away......burn more in in fuel getting it there and back, than it cost me...
So I've looked around and all I can get serviced locally, is either the Huskie or Stihl....
Looking at the Stihl 250 for $399 or the Huskie 455 or 460 for $499.
Any of you chain saw guys can offer some direction of which way to go, I'd appreciate it...
Home Depot and its warranty on these items is virtually useless.... yet they still try to get me to buy an extended warranty....

I'm a Stihl guy, well was. They've served me well. I have a Farm Boss that probably has 70 cords of wood to its name. Only thing it ever needed was a new oil pump for the bar. It's gone through half a dozen bars. However, Stihl now makes you register your new saw with all of your private information, name, address, email, phone, and it pisses me off. They say it's for warranty...right. Why do I keep getting sales emails now? And you can't buy their products without giving it. I see zero reason for the data collection. I'll even skip the warranty. Not sure about Husky, but if they don't collect the private info. they are getting my next purchase.

notes . just because its high octane doesn't mean it's always ethanol free.. .Id buy a smaller pro saw before a bigger home owner for same $$ . . go to an actual saw shop pick your brand on the though of best parts ans service support.

Husky or Stihl should be easy to get either serviced in Oregon.
Fam has always ran Stihl.
Go to the local dealer for each, NOT Home Depot, and see which dealer makes your socks go up/down the most.

I'm a Husky guy, but won't disrespect Stihl. Interested in your choice.
There is a difference to size and weight between those Huskies and that stihl. 54cc in the smaller, 58 in the 460. That's a different class of saw, and 13# to the Stihl's 10#.
I'd go 460, for your use. Just for some grunt if you bury a 20" bar in a tree.
Personally, I'd buy a Pro saw. You dont need that.
Look at Echo if a local dealer sells them. They build a fine saw in your range.
You have to be careful if running ethanol gas. Over time the ethanol will pull water out of the air. When the water exceeds the ethanol capacity to hold it, it will phase shift. Pooling in the bottom of the jug, and stripping oil out of suspension. You will be running straight gas, even though you put oil in it.

Lewis Power has Husky....and full time on site saw mechanic...for only about 5% more on price than Tractor Supply. They are on Redwood Hwy across from Albertsons.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

John, I've got three Stihl and a Husky. All good saws. In fact I have an extra a Stihl 026 if you want it. I can trade for something or sell outright.

OP,
If you set the saw on the ground, can you pick it up by the starter handle? Without the cord coming out?

Iβve used Stihl all my life. I just bought a 250 Farm Boss and was quite happy with the performance of that little saw. As mentioned above you have to go to the Stihl dealer to get a real Stihl. The ones sold at the big box stores are only Stihl in name, NOT in quality.
As to which one you should get?β¦get whatever you can get at your local dealership since thatβs where youβll be taking it for service.

Go with either. I would choose the shop that will provide the best service. I have both and use the huskies more. Worth the money to go with a pro model, in my opinion.
