Kimber Pro Varmint .223 is on the .306 action, but it's already downsized from the typical bolt gun. I like it! The M84 Montana in .223 is a sweet, if light, rifle.

Kimber 84M's are on 308 receivers,First Gen 84's are lesser and a bust. Hint.
My Mike Rock 7" RPM Montucky 223AI,is easily amongst my Favoritest Rifles of ALL Time and I've only multiple hunnerts to sort through. Hint.
Howa Mini's,CZ's and Sako's suck ass there. Hint.
Light done RIGHT,has no equal and the Montucky is without peer. Hint...........

I have a Ruger American compact in .223 with an 8 twist and 18" barrel. I have never weighed it but it's less than 7 lbs. The only downside is the magazine.
kwg A very easy and worthwhile fix, buy an AI magwell directly from Ruger so you can use the AI magazines. turns the downside into an upside, then to finish it off schitt can the trigger and put on a timney I have a Ruger American Compact in 223 that is very accurate but can't use the std. magazine when shooting Nosler 70 gr. RDF bullets due to the bullets seated out to touch the rifling. I checked into the AI magazines & a lot of negative comments on feeding issues. I contacted Ruger about the std. magazine being "too short" when using heavier handloaded bullets, and inquired about a longer accessory magazine, their reply was that they don't recommend using handloaded ammo....WTF?

I would like to own a well thought out fast twist 223 in Stainless. What’s the answer?
Find a cheap 700 SS, trigger tech, 1-7” barrel and a McMillan MR stock?

Not stainless but the new cz 600 alpha is 6.6 lbs with 24” 1:7 twist Cut it down to 20”? And maybe you can get to 6lbs.
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Find a cheap 700 SS, trigger tech, 1-7” barrel and a McMillan MR stock? I think the answer would be your preference but what you’re describing would be a dandy. I have got to where I like the Sako Hunter/McMillan Hunter the best on a sporter barrel. I’d like to try a manners eh8 too. I was firmly in the don’t want a magazine hanging out camp but the more I use them the more I want them on everything. I did just have Shaen rebarrel a 223 montana with a 1-7” Lilja dupe. That makes for a right proper 223 but finding a 700 donor would be easier and faster. Most likely.

The standard magazine is an AR magazine on the Ruger American, for whatever reason they only used the AI platform on the 204 Ruger. I just bought the AI magwell from Ruger and the AI magazine's say right on them 223 multi caliber (10rounders). They feed night and day better than the AR mags and you can load as long as 2.255" Once my friends tried it out I have done 5 conversions now no complaints, I also swapped out 4 of the 5 triggers AI feeding complaints are on the other AI platform for 6.5 Gaymoor and the like not the 204 Ruger and 223

Found out that I have the older version American w/o the magazine well & would have to upgrade to the newer style stock just to be able to use the AI magazine. Not going thru all that.

Stainless 700, stainless Douglas #1 @22", Grayboe Trekker, M5 bm, AM 5 rounder w/filed front for OAL.
After spending a fair amount of time with one this past year, the Trekker is making it hard to like other lightweight stocks.

What does the Montana offer over the 700 when you can get a trigger tech? I suppose offer would be up to the user? In a real light rifle I like the Montana as well as any and better than some Remington builds. The money is worth mentioning for some of us. I paid $900 for one of my 223 Montana’s and $1,000 for the other one. I understand those prices have changed. So toss the barrel I can’t get a tiny stainless side bolt release action trigger magazine box follower and light stiff stock for that. All that said I have been and still am extremely happy with some of my 700’s.

For those that have used the Montana as the platform? Is it just a Lilja 1-7” barrel dupe all that you guys did? Need for a bedding job? How does it feed in AI?

CRF's have more moving parts/pieces and are more involved than a PF,for relaible feed/function. Hint.
I tend to open the exhaust port, along with the requisite magbox shim slide, then also shorten the ejector/bolt stop. Hint.
I prefer a shortened shank, along with the contour dupe. Hint..............
