midway way carries 338-06 tubes for savage and mauser actions and maybe even 700. lee makes dies for it and so does many other companys and you can neck up 30-06 brass and it works perfect. you can shoot one pretty cheaply if you want or very expensively if you want 338-06 headstamped brass.

Steve, Do you shoot the .338-06 anymore? What bullet do / would you use these days? This was my answer to your article from years ago. [img][/img] Thanks!

I understand that the 338-06 A-Square is proprietary to A-Square as is the 6.5-06 A-Square. Weatherby did chamber a few rifles for that ilk. TC chambers barrels for the Encore, I have one. I my experience it is no better than the 35W which I like very much.

I don't know why anyone would want a 338-06, much less the AI version. Teeder, I really like that 700. Here's mine. Built on a pre-64,24" Sheilen tube, nestled into a featherweight stock, and 'modified' post 64 bottom metal.

Steve,
Wasn't there some compatibility snafu between the way Weatherby cut the chambers and the dimensions of the loaded ammo Norma made for them?

IMO it's more practical than anything dished out by the factories over the past 6 or 7 years.

I certainly can't believe that anyone thinks a .30TC, .338 Fed.,.243 WSSM would outsell a .338-06. Why won't someone chamber a rifle in this caliber?

jstevens,
The problem is that there is not a major ammunition manufacturer producing 338-06 ammo. Rifle manufacturers are not going to spend 10's of thousands of dollars to produce a rifle that you can't buy ammo for.

There may not be a great number of ammunition options for the .338-06, but it beats what you can buy for the .358 Win. rifles that Ruger and Browning are currently offering. CP.

Besides the high cost of ammo the other thing I noticed is no company built it in everyday affordable rifles. Weatherby's version I think cost around $800 or more,(Not sure of the actual price anymore.) Winchester had it listed in their custom gun section, but were any ever made and of course A-Square. Not guns most people could afford. Besides if you really wanted one you could get a used rifle have a barrel put on it and still be under what you would have to pay for one of the above mentioned factory rifles.
By the way, what did Art Alphin do that set the industry against him so they wouldn't even consider stamping the cartridge on their barrels. I remember Ross Seyfried writing he didn't like anything A-Square too.
