For any of the big bore cartridges I prefer 24", though I have a 22" barrel on my BDL in 270 and it's wonderful. At 375 H&H velocities you'll lose about 25 fps per inch.

Chuck

Balance most important, then beware of muzzle blast if too short as well. I like my rifles to balance at the midpoint of the magazine floorplate everyone has their own preference.

I have a 416 rigby in the CZ 550 that I cut shorter. Also put a muzzle break on it and a recoil reducing rod in the stock. Kicks about the same as a 300 WM. Really enjoy it.

Cut my 416 Rigby to 21 and has a muzzle break tread on there. Accuracy is great and has taken a few Buffalo over the years. Put a recoil reducing rod in the stock also so the recoil is very little. Enjoy shooting it.
