I found a cool looking old custom Mauser in a local pawn shop. It has a very nice walnut custom stock and very nice jeweling on the bolt. Overall very neat looking old rifle, but the barrel is stamped 257 REM and nothing else. I know Remington was the first to make the 257 Roberts a commercial cartridge, but did anyone ever call if the 257 Remington even early on? I recently sold all the 257 Roberts ammo I had so can't just go back and see if it chambers.

IIRC .... There were a couple very similar wildcat versions before it was standardized.

.257 Remington Roberts , Yes.
Grumpy old man with a gun.....Do not touch . Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Don't bother my monument and I'll leave yours alone.

They may have called it .257 Remington rather than Roberts to distinguish the shoulder angle change from Robert's original design.

Several, including Remington, tried to "own" it. I have a piece of brass with a 257 REM headstamp. I also have an old box of Griffin & Howe brass manufactured to an earlier, slightly different spec.

I knew you guys would come through. Lots of knowledge here as always. I may take a chance on it. Looks to be a quality build.

Good thing I looked it over again before buying. Whoever drilled the holes for the scope base must have been drunk at the time.

My May 1935 dated Rem 30 is stamped 25 Roberts, same as the different earlier wildcat cartridge was named. That's probably why they added the 7.
