Recently picked up a 1995 edition of Melvin's Model 28 in 7mm Rem Mag w 24" stainless barrel. Anybody got any idea how he had those Douglas Barrels twisted in 1995? Thanks for any intel.

Never mind. Larry Potterfield just taught me how to measure it.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Forbes preferred a 1 in 10" twist in 7mm RM unless a customer specified otherwise.

You are correct. Was hoping for 1 in 9.5 maybe. Haven't had a 7mm Rem Mag in a while. Not optimal for 175 ELD X's but we will see. Pretty clean rifle. Recoil isn't bad with 150's. Shot 180 VLD's about a half an inch left believe it or not at 100. Group opened up a little but not too bad for hunting. Gotta run some 175 ELD X's next.

Sounds like your ULA shoots very well.
Any pictures?

Here's a couple. Hasn't been shot much it doesn't appear. Recoil isn't bad. Little better than my ULA 28 in 300 Win which isn't bad either. Been shooting Melvin's rifles for 34 years now since he built me my first 284 in 1990. I love em.

Thanks. Me too. I have several with the standard green camo and a couple with the desert camo but not this one.

I’ve had five 260, 250, 22-250, 6x45 and 223. I still have the 250, 22-250 and 223 and will never part with them.

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

I've had a Model 28 in 7x61 Sharpe & Hart Magnum for ten or so years. It's about 300-400 rounds into the third barrel. My favorite elk rifle...or is it the Model 20 in .308?

The rifle weighs 5.75 lbs. Throw in a couple ounces for Melvin's rings and 14.5 oz for the Swarovski Z3 4-12x50 BT I had laying around and it comes out to about 6.8lbs I guess. Got some 175 grain ELD X's loaded up by Choice Ammunition and it keyholes them at 100 yards. Seems like it should be hell on elk. We will see. I had a 7x61 Sharp and Hart many years ago. It was not a ULA but shot very well. Kinda the 280 Ackley/ precursor the the 7 mag. I guess.

I see Hornady recommends 8.5" minimum twist for those.

By keyholing I don't mean the bullet tumbled into the target. I was getting groups shaped like a keyhole which suprised me as well. It shot the 175s as well as the 150s.

That's the first time I've encountered keyholing used that way.

Yup thought about it after posting it. Figured it would need clarification. Shoots pretty damn good is my point.

I believe that's helping. It may not do so well down in Cajun country at 45 feet. grin

Makes sense. I think the elk in Cajun country are safe from me. Maybe not so much in the mountains.
