If you to build one or the other which would you build? i was thinking a magnum action 6.5 Rem. mag and utilize longer bullets? or use the action to build the 6.5-300 WM - I am liking the 6.5 calibers and not taken the full gulp of kool aid on the 6.5 CM. For me my 260 Rem. are a 6.5 CM for the animals on the other end.

Don't waste your time, money or effort with either. Pick up a 6.5 PRC and go forth to shoot stuff.

Ditch the 6.5mm and move on up to .284 or 7mm

On a long action with a magnum bolt face, I’d probably go with a properly twisted .264 Win Mag. If not tied to 6.5, I’d be looking hard at the 7mm PRC.

I think I spy a Pre-64 Model 70 264 Win spout, laying in the pile of Mail. I hate the receivers and the chambering,so it will be fhuqking funny! Hint....................

Stick - let me guess, you’re building the 6.5/300 Weatherby you have been dreaming about. PS, that’s pure sarcasm.

I've got a stainless fluted vanguard in 6.5x300 that I bought pretty cheap in like new shape. I just thought the longer howa built action might be worth building a 28 nosler or something on later and stainless howa built stuff us getting harder to find.

I may just give it a try as is. I've got a bunch of 127 lrx bullets that might be fun to drive at about 3400. Would of been a good round back in the prerangefinder and pre dialing days when speed was more helpful.

I should probably just get rid of it because the odds of me hunting with a 26" barrel again just keep going down. The 22" barrel on my latest rifle seems long enough. The 6.5x300 is threaded too for the guy that wants to go packing it through the trees with a suppressor on.

The 6.5-300 Wby is the answer to a question nobody was asking.

The 6.5 Remington Magnum was/is a highly under-rated cartridge for its time.

While the 6.5 REM MAG might be under-rated, it certainly comes with its own set of challenges.

The 6.5 REM MAG has approximately the same case capacity as the 6.5-284, so performance is approximately the same if all of the variables are equal. Both the 6.5 REM MAG and 6.5-284 are (IMO) too long to fit in short actions without running into COAL issues at 2.78" with most bullets longer than 1.125". Remington/Peters only loaded 100 and 120 grain bullets to make COAL fit into Remington short actions. While you could build a long action 6.5 REM MAG, it would probably be easier to get comparable performance with the 6.5-06 and the 6.5-06 would probably feed more smoothly in a long action without having to modify the feed rails.

I played with the 6.5 REM MAG in a Ruger 77R and a 1936 Mexican Mauser 25 or so years ago. The Mauser had a longer action, so it handled longer/heavier bullets better than the short action Ruger does. The Mexican Mauser is long gone, probably a poor decision on my part since the 1936 Mexican is my favorite SR post-1898 style of military Mauser.

Good luck with whatever way you choose to go.

I've an original Rem 700 short action in 6.5 Rem Mag. It's a good shooter! My best load used Barnes 120TSX, H4831SC, & a Fed 210 or 215. In todays world, I'd find a short action w/ a 3.0 or 3.1" magazine chambered in 6.5PRC. BUT, I now have two 270Win rifles that are just as good and about as ballistically equal to my 6.5Rem as one can get, so I'm not going to bother w/ a 6.5PRC or 6.5/280AI either. Now, I have a FN Mauser Musketeer in 308Norma Mag that I thought would make a nice 257 or 270 RoyW. but that 7mmPRC looks really neat, too. Or, most likely, I'll just load up some 130gr Barnes TTSX monos in some reformed 300WinMag brass and call it good. Sometimes the KISS Method is the best road to follow,
