Walked into Collector's Firearms today, a huge gun store in Houston, with a decent wad of cash in my wallet. I looked at this one for a long time: https://www.collectorsfirearms.com/products/183139-c-sharps-1885-high-wall-rifle-40-2-12-r39341.htmlIn ".40 2½" cartridge, with a 24" #3 barrel. Bore is excellent. The stock seems maybe an inch longer than standard. So, the barrel's too short for me, and the stock is too long I must be getting old, to walk into a gun shop, flush with cash, and then walk out without buying anything....

C Sharps probably makes the best high wall clone out there. As this one is configured it would make a nice hunting rifle. For target work the barrel is 4 to 6" short. Next problem is the chambering, no one makes properly headstamped 40 2 1/2" brass. Baco makes brass from stretched 30-40 Krag. Damned little 40 -2 1/2" Jamison brass floating around out there. Same gun in 40-65 with 26-30" barrel prolly get snapped up under 10 minutes for over 2k+. There is a reason why it is sitting there..mb

I'd like to get a smaller BPCR gun in the .40-.44 range, but brass and loading components are now pretty sketchy, so I've held off getting one. I have an original High Wall, with a 22" 1/2 octagon barrel, in .45-90...so I am all set for short barrel thumpers

Well tex I'm sure you can get RCC to make some at 8-9 bucks a piece. However to get enough it would be cheaper to rebarrel for a cartridge you can buy Starline for. Way I see it. Mb

FWIW, it's an additional 20% off this Friday. Which go a ways toward a barrel

At 20% off, that's a great price!

Hmmm. I do have a lot of .40-70 brass that came Bill Bagwell’s Shiloh Sharps. I don’t really need it but at 20% off it would be about $1500. Heck of a deal

I've read of people being able to use .405 WCF cases in their .40x2.5" rifles.

405's are in damn short supply also. I forget but you have to modify the rim diameter or the rim cut diameter of the chamber so they work. PIA..mb

I picked up a .405 Win #1 Ruger this spring, and collecting 100 cases involved sticker shock. Surprisingly, bullets are fairly easy to acquire.

Rocky Mountain Cartridge is still running full tilt. You can form 30-40 Krag to the 40-70 ss
the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to. www.historicshooting.com
