I’ve had my Ruger 77 for about 40 years now. I use 85 grain a Barnes to and reloaded 19. I’ve killed a bunch of mule deer with that combo!

The 6mm Rem does really well in a Winchester Model 70 short action seating the projectiles out to about 3.04" with it appropriately throated for such. That's when you really start to get a difference in velocity between the .243 and the 6mm Rem. Wow that is long. I can barely get longer than factory length in my Rem 700.

You can get a Wyatt extended internal mag for your Rem 700 short action and seat to about 2.92". Worth doing if you use plastic tipped bullets of 90 grains or more.

It cracks me up to see these threads about how great a 6mm at 2950-3200 fps is on deer and hogs, but the 6.5 Creedmore is a POS that shouldn't even be sold it is so inferior....
Carry on...

Carry on... Don't think I heard or read even 1 disparaging word about the 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor in this whole thread. Maybe you should read the whole thing Mb

My model 7 6mm does 2900 with a 100g partition. IIRC it also did 3200 with 85g speer btsps over aa4064.
My little brother killed a nice mule deer buck at close to 400 yards with the 100g partition load in it. I wat he'd the buck drop. It flattened it.

What's the point of trying to even derail the thread by bringing up a 6.5 Creedmoor?

Yeah I read the whole thread not once but twice simply because I have a M 7 6mm rem with the 18.5' barrel. I am not against listening to others who will share their experiences.. with the cost of components these days saving a few misteps keeps money in your pocket. I like the 243 and the 6mm Creedmoor also. If I wanted to use my 6.5 I'd go where those who use it are discussing it. Mb

The 6mm Rem is a steaming pile of fhuqking schit,no matter the barrel length. Starting velocity, isn't impact velocity and that fhuqks up more than a few Droolers. Hint.
Bullets matter more than headstamps ladies,if only to your perpetual chagrin. Hint.

I regard 18” barrels, unless suppressed, as inventions of the devil, not because of the velocity loss, but rather the noise. Yeah, you can plug up or use some kind of electronic protection that lets you hear in the woods, but how many actually do? In addition, though it’s been a long, long time since I handled a M7, my recollection is that it was poorly balanced, like a lot of shorties. Since it came to mind when you were thinking about thinning the herd, it must not wind your clock. Let it go, and replace it if need be with something that suits the kid you bought it for; maybe even let he/she/them pick it out. Consider something that’s not difficult to find ammo and/or components for so if the child chooses to hang onto it, it won’t turn into a scavenger hunt every year. Let’s face it, the 6mm Rem ain’t coming back in any big way. That leaves, in similar choices, the .243 and the 6CM. The CM is a more versatile cartridge by virtue of its standard twist, but rifle choices are fewer. The .243 wins the rifle variety contest, but except for a few examples, is limited to 1-10” or 1-9” twist barrels. Not a big deal for factory hunting ammo, which will all work fine in those.
Outside of 6mm, consider the 6.5 Grendel, which is mild, accurate, and a good killer.
What fresh Hell is this?
