My goal is to build a light walking rifle in .223 for varmint hunting.. I'd like to stay under 7#'s all in.. I have a bunch of 700's and Stiller predator actions, will order a barrel or two in light weight contours, #1 maybe?

The stock is what I'm not sure of... Lots of 30 ounce stocks around, What about 20 ounces.. Availability plays a role in both barrels and stocks.. Any help or advice would be appreciated..

If I could find a reasonable Kimber Montana I'd just do that

Thanks!

Tough to get a 20 oz stock. Over the last couple of years I've come to like the Grayboe Trekker. I think they list it as 28 oz but both of mine are around 22-23 oz. I use them with no spacer's on the LOP. I'm not sure what the LOP is without spacers but it's shorter than most of my sporter stocks. I think the vertical grip makes it more comfortable to shoot with the short LOP.

Below is a .223AI, Grayboe Trekker, stainless Douglas #1 at 22", Hawkins Hunter M5 bottom metal and I use Hawkins flush fit .223 mags. Since that pic was taken, rings have been changed to Hawkin Hybrids and scope is now a SWFA 3-9. In that config it's 7 lbs 1.5 oz without mag...mag is around 3.5 oz I think. If I was doing it again, I'd do it this way again.

Very few true 20 oz stocks. Manners UC is one; brown with the Kevlar pounder option and light pad is another. MPI claims one. Possibly the Stocky’s cf but haven’t handled one (other than the howa mini version) to verify.

Wildcat for the Canadians.

Both my 7mm-08 and 7mm RM are in Brown Kevlar Pounders and both are #1 tapers. I don’t think that I would go that thin a barrel on a varmint rifle and in retrospect, I wish I’d have opted for #2’s on both of those. They do scale around 7# with 30mm variables. I had a .222 RM Sako and it was too light for steady holding. You won’t get a custom ultra light weight stock for cheap, so looking for something ready made I think is your best option.

My other auto is a .45

Beat me to it. That one is on my “get list.”

^^ this stuff. Maybe add the Manners UC-Plus, which has a longer and wider fore-end than the UC. I prefer the shape of the UCP to the UC by a lot, but the ones I had came in at 21 oz with an ultralight pad and 23 oz with a decelerator. A UC with an ultralight pad will be 18 or 19 ounces.

If you're looking for something with a high comb...they all seem to be heavier.

Have you had a chance to actually weigh any? They must be pretty damn close to 20 ounces for the backcountry ti’s to be as light as they are.

No, preference is a classic style... Unless I get lucky think I'm going to have to order and wait - probably for the barrel too..

I will look at the Stockys CF stock as well... The UCP might be the best of the best !! Or maybe an Edge fill but have read they are coming in at 26+..

Really my hunting is just pigs and varmints anymore.. So this light weight build will be what I use 90+% of the time..

And a #2 contour might be better.. Thanks !

I have a Manners UC for a Remington short action with a 13' LOP. It came in at 17 oz. from Manners. I have since modified it, so it weighs a bit more.

Youngest (11 yo) and I spent some time today shooting the rifle pictured above (and a couple of lever guns and revolvers). Yesterday we were shooting Howa mini's in 6 ARC (Stocky's carbon) and 6.5 Grendel (factory carbon stock). We only shot the .223, 6 ARC, and 6.5 Gren out to 300 yards. Because of this thread it was fresh on my mind so I asked which of the stocks he liked shooting best. He said the Trekker was his favorite by far. I've come to prefer it to all others.

With the Grayboe 4th of July sale you can order a Trekker in basic paint for a 700 for 35% off which comes to $324.35. Pretty sweet deal.

Not a fan of the Grayboe Trekker myself, For the OP's use I prefer the Grayboe Outlander can be had for $287.20
