I have an AR that is a CMMG upper on a Windham Weaponry lower. It has the A2 style front sight, and Midwest Industries flip-up rear sight. I'm not a big fan of open sights, mostly because of my eyes, but this is a rifle that stays in my truck, and I wanted a no-frills, simple setup. The problem is that I can't seem to get it shoot to suit me. If I zero it at 50 yards, it's way low at 25. I want it zeroed for close range shooting, because I figure that's mostly what I'd be faced with if I ever need it. I don't know whether to keep messing with it, or just put a red dot on it and call it good. Any ideas as to what's wrong with the setup?

Is mechanical offset the issue?

I'm not sure if this is the cause, and I'm not sure if you are aware, but AR's, are notorious for having a rainbow trajectory.

And then take into consideration the height over the bore for close up shots, seems to compound that issue.

FWIW, I, and the military, zeroes their 556 guns at 25 meters/yards.

Just sayin'.

How low is way low at 25 yards? Something doesn't sound quite right.

I was already thinking I'd just go back to a 25 yard zero or else go to a red dot. My eyes just do not like the open sight setup at all, and it's the only AR I have that isn't scoped, with the exception of an old Colt A2. For whatever the reason, the Colt is no problem to hit with.

I don't think you're actually zeroed at 50. Especially if the irons are giving your eyes trouble.

There definitely isn't a rainbow trajectory between 25 and 50 yards. And there is no way there is a 6" difference between zeroed at 50 and shooting at 25 yards. Something is off for sure.

A.). You don’t have “open sights” you have iron sights.

B.). I doubt the rear is compatible with the front.

C.). You’re a fugking moron so don’t discount this important factor.

D.). Nothing is less frills, than a quality red dot.

Just what we needed.

Another idiot.

Doesn't matter what caliber it is, if you put it into an AR it instantly turns the trajectory into a rainbow. 22-250? Rainbow. 257 Bee? Rainbow. 223? Ultra super mega rainbow. You're gonna be 24" low at 25 yards and 240" low at 100 yards if you zero at 50. /s

OP, if you don't have astigmatism, get a red dot; if you do, get a prism sight. Quicker to acquire with, light, relatively inexpensive (even the good ones), and batteries last forever. You can also toss a 3x magnifier on if you need to stretch range out a bit.

Red dots are the easy button here. They have worked really well for me.

I’d still get those irons figured out though, something not right going on there.

I can’t even fathom a reason/problem that would cause a 6” difference between 25 and 50 yards. That’s more than my 39 shooting CB shorts has, way more.

Red dot or prism sight for what you described.

Irons are obviously not your thing.

Found my problem. I was shooting at a picture of Deflave, and it just wasn't as big as advertised, so I was having trouble seeing it. Switched to a different target, and everything is good now.

I should have known better, because an azzhole is a pretty small target.

Good to see it only took you eight hours to compile that knee slapper.

Now put a straightedge from your front sight to the rear aperture.

Is it level?

Klan rallies must be getting in the way of this rifle project.
