I just put on a SWFA 1-4.5 scope on an AR. Front site is in the site-picture through the scope.

Looking at the front site, looks like a couple pins. Is there a trick to removing this?

Assuming you have a new low profile gas block to replace the front sight base.

I've pulled several, along the way. Usually it goes without any trouble. You need to remove the gas tube first, by removing the little roll pin with a 1/16" punch. Try not to lose the roll pin, it's easy to drop. Then work the gas tube rearward out of the base.

The pins are tapered. Make sure you tap them out from the smaller diameter side. Usually left-to-right.

If they are really hard to move try putting some Kroil, or similar, and letting it soak in for a day or so.

When you get the pins out, just tap the sight base forward with gentle taps using a plastic mallet or something else not too hard. Rotate it and work it forward.

If you use a normal AR mount the crosshairs will be above the front sight. Unless you are going to mount a longer rail over the gas block, I much prefer the fixed front sight. It also will disappear on 4x.

I’ve cut the tower off a few and kept the pinned gas block under a longer rail.

Why don't you just take a hacksaw or a sawzall and cut the tower off just above the gas block?

It will look like this:
