Was under the impression that the 338 federal was not a long range round. Just a good mid range thumper of a round.
Would be a good choice though regardless.

Ought to make a heck of a hog gun, even if it's a little bigger than necessary. Once you get that .338 bullet moving it ought to carry just fine for what is long range to me - if not to others.

That presumption that the 338 Federal is a "worse" long range rifle than the 308 is wrong in some aspects. Such as with 180gr and heavier bullets. Dig up The American Rifleman of November 2006 and read the article by Bryce Towsley. Careful, what you learn may cost you a couple thousand if you want it in one of the AR guns. But you'd be very pleased with it and well served by it. Order one today!

Expansion ratio is a wonderful thing! Some of what you lose in BC with the shorter, fatter bullets in say a 338 Fed or even .358 Win, you at least partly make up with increased velocity... fer instance, I can push a 200-gn bullet from my .358 at pretty much the same speed that a 30-06 can pust a 200!
But... lest someone take that wrong... I'm not saying that the .358 is the equal of the 30-06 at long range. Just that it's surprising what happens as that bore size gets bigger.

Have thought about an upper for my AR-10 in .338/08 or .358Win. Also thought about a .338saum, now that one would have some potential!
Yet a .308Win loaded with a 180 Grand Slam is a real doable thing in the AR-10. Any other premium bullet too! Have thought about doing a .450Marlin Upper, even have the barrel; a 25" pacnor 1:18 twist. There is also the .458socom or 50beowulf.
I live in AK. Another guy I know put this situation in perspective when he remarked that with 20rds of .308Win, he would not feel undergunned if he was confronted by a Brown Bear. So, I have .308s loaded with Grand Slams... And a few 20rd mags.
The place a .338 neck-up really shines is with the .338-06 AI, or the .338/300 You get great flexibility, less pressure due to the reduced bullet-bearing area and likely greater barrel life. The extra velocity is just pure gravy!
Lots of potential with the AR-10. Could never see the .300saum over the .308, but a 6XC would really be something. .338saum would also offer a lot. There are guys doing .450Marlin uppers. Load one of those with a 300gr spire point, Wow!

I could be wrong, its been known to happen.... More frequently than I care to admit....
a 180 which is good territory for bullet weight in 308 rounds, would not be as aerodynamic in a 338 caliber the way I look at it. And a 308 is certainly not what I'd consider a long range round. Of course it'll suffice for sniper rounds and paper targets at long range, but for hunting... not what I'm thinking anyway.

Since I already have AR's in 243WSSM and am just finishing up my .458socom my next project will be some other action I am thinking of doing a custom T-C Pro Hunter with the 338-06 A Square, and 25-06 and maybe 204 Barrels just to round things out

Never was impressed with Towsley, being a competitive shooter and reading some of his competitive shooting articles, one learns real quick he may be a writer, he is not a shooter. And getting the info from a mag article, especially an NRA one, well trust what you want, I prefer real world info.
