Cheap mags lead to lots of headaches trying to diagnose non-existent problems; cheapest mags that I will use that work are the Brownell's aluminum with a magpul follower.

Magpul Gen 2&3 & Lancers are what I use for the most part & they've been really good.

The Brownell's mentioned above & the ASC coated stainless are also good.

With magazines, you get what you pay for, IMO.

You can get too cheap. End up with the Hi-Point of magazines.

Magazines galore at Brownells just outside of Grinnell. I would skip the cheap ones. Brownells does make some good magazines. Catch them on sale and they only cost about 12 or 13 dollars. They have powder in the store if you reload.

kwg

How many magazines do you need/want?

Good magazines last forever if you maintain them.

I have 10x 20 round magazines for my AR varmint upper and 13x 30 round magazines for each of my M4 style ARs. The 20 round magazines work better for me when shooting off of a portable bench out on the prairie.

I'm gonna disagree. Mags are a consumable. They can and do fail. Considering the real possibility of them becoming unobtanium (again) I think having a lot* is a good idea.

I've had at least 1 AR for over 35 years, AR15s and AR180s, and don't recall having had any magazine failures. I carry a sustainment pouch to collect empty magazines, so they never get thrown onto the ground.

I do rotate loaded magazines three times per year so that the springs don't sag.

My experience in the Marines wasn't similar.

Sometimes stuff goes on the ground out of haste/necessity.

My experience in the Army was different too, but that was military, in my case training, and this is civilian use. If I wasn't paying for gear, I wouldn't care what happened to it after I'd used it during the process of accomplishing a mission.

👍👍👍

My "social use" rifles are ARs. Hence the amount of mags.

I only have 3 ten rounders and 3 twenty rounders I use for hunting

I have plenty of magazines and buy quality when I buy some. Even high quality mags like Magpul don't cost that much so I see no reason to buy the cheapest available.
