I am considering building a 308 as an all weather do all beat around rifle with great parts.
I have a defiance rebel SA action (GAP Templar) Badger M5 dbm
I am thinking about tripping the DBM for aluminum BDL or Hawkins Hunter. Stainless #3 or #4SS fluted. Around 20 inches. 22 inches max.
Hung up on the stock. I have several McMillan Edges and want more comb height. I'll probably mount a 50mm scope as low as possible. If they make a straight or reverse comb pattern with edge fill I would be all over it. Never tried the manners or other McMillan options. Remington and Kimber patterns fit me well.
I am thinking I would like it to be 8-8.5 all up.
Thoughts? Examples of similar builds?

Just sayin'............................. No doubt the waypoint is a nice rifle, but I have an action that is begging to get spun up. I like a 308 on this one. Primary box blind type rifle with majority of shots inside 400yds. I want it short, well balanced and handy.

I have lotsa 308's,264 Kreed's and Seex Kreed's. Hint. The Waypoint in .243" is simply fhuqking spectacular. If only to the chagrin of Brokedicks and their GoogleFu. Hint. I'm happy with a fast twist 223 wayyyyyyyy beyond 400yds and have LOTS of them too. Blind,ADL and AICS fed all, same as the 308's,264 Kreeds and Seex Kreeds. 7" twist Montucky there, with a mag shim slide there, for the win. Hint. Just sayin'....................

Thoughts? Examples of similar builds? I'm using a Mesa Precision Altitude on a similar rifle. Tenacity action, Proof 20" .308 carbon prefit, Hawkins Hunter M5, Def rail, SWFA 6x, and low rings. It's a handy rifle. The Altitude stock has a high enough comb to work with most scopes. The rail and low (.82") rings give plenty of clearance with a 42mm obj. JCM - that's a fine piece you've got there.
Good intel on the stock too - I hadn't considered that one before.

JC and Stick where are those rifles weighing in? I want to stay with a standard SS bbl. Kreiger 4 grove is my preference if I can get one.
What are the specs on the mesa barrel channel? I only see sporter and varmint options.
Disregard on the bbl channel specs. I see one can order with specifications...

T3 ceracoated sporter in 308, 20” barrel, sporter stock modified to take CTR bottom metal and CTR mags and with a cheek rest swiped off of a CTR stock. SWFA 6x MQ in Sportsmatch rings, ASR brake. May put a LPVO on it, we’ll see. The cheek rest makes a material positive difference in scope alignment with my eye. My “General Purpose Rifle.”

Just sayin'............................. Does Springfield make their own receivers? I see now that Proof offers pre-fits for Waypoints so they must be spec'ed pretty tight!

When faced with the same question, this is what I came up with: Defiance Tenacity, Proof at 20", McMillan Game Hunter, Hawkins M5 Hunter DBM. Soon to be wearing ARC rings.

308 Win Pacnor barrel in Remington magnum contour. It’s just chopped off at 20-1/2”. Balances perfect in the McMillan HTG stock. I like BDL or ADL bottoms. Slick and sleek for me. Never cared for a video cassette style mag.

gunnut308, that rifle is about perfect, congrats. You might be surprised how much you might like the Hawkins Hunter DBMs. I wasn't a fan of any DBM until I tried the Hawkins Hunter, now I have three and wouldn't consider a BDL at this stage in my life. Keeping a loaded spare mag in my hunting kit is a great way to keep ammo in the field and makes for a very fast reload if such a thing becomes necessary.

The Waypoint does indeed wear a Custom action. The 1913 rail is pinned in place, the recoil lug is integral, bolt handles are threaded, double port gas protection and the side bolt release is a nice touch. Hint. AICS binderless mags for me,all the way. Hint. The HTG is a rather poor stock design, with Dog Schit ergo's and an exceedingly low comb and I suffer more than a "few". Hint. Pass the Waypoint and hold The Fluff. Hint. Just sayin'...........................

The Waypoint certainly does seem to be done "right".
Not even a dab of steel-bed in that lug recess? Must shoot well enough to leave it be.
Now with even more aplomb

Keeping them to headspace tolerance of +/- .001″ or thereabouts for pre-fits is impressive.
