I own several 284s and hand load for all of them. I enjoy the oddball catridges and just like shooting something different.

If you're going short action then tough to justify not go go with a 7mm-08...having to seat the bullet deep into the 284 for short action limits the extra capacity of the 284 and will probably only see 50-100fps over the 7mm-08.

If you're going long action 284, then you have the decision to just go 280 or even better 280ai.

It's hard to justify a 284win just based on ballistics...but if you like the cool factor and just want something different then it's a very neat caliber.

This will be a long action. Savage 110. The 280 makes more sense but I've already got 338-06, 30-06, and 270 win. Want to go a different direction with this rifle.

If you're going long action... make sure you go 1:8 twist to take advantage of the long high bc bullets.

I have a soft spot for the .284 as it was the first deer rifle I ever purchased, way back around 1966. It was fairly new back then and I took my first 2 bucks with Speer 130 grain that I handloaded. Now, the 7x57 or 7x64 is my huckleberry.
