I'm reading a book by George Leonard Herter that was published in 1963. You could go on a one month safari in Kenya and Tanganyika for $690.00 smile

Your first elephant license was $210 - 2nd was $280, and Black Rhinos were $112. Lions were only $7

Reading some old books (1800's) where the writers felt sorry for folks that only had 4 or 5 months to spend. Some of them did 2 or three years.

Have 5 books coming published between 1850 and 1925.

Don’t forget the fellas that went hunting to make money. I read some books on the old ivory hunters and talk about a life of adventure. Not many of them lived to enjoy retirement, though…

There was a terrific essay in the December 5, 2008 NYT on George Herter, "The Oddball Know-It-All." If you can find the article at your local library it's well worth the read. I've still got a couple of Herter's wonderful catalogues from the mid-1970's.

I did a one month safari in Tanzania several years ago. It cost a little more than that.

Depending on the country and the game probably $35k minimum. Add elephant or lion and you would be $100k easily.
When the wife and I spent a month in Tanz it was an eight day photo safari, 14 day hunt in the Selous and a week on Mafia island. Total was about $35k not including airfare and taxidermy. That was in 2007. The trip of a lifetime for us.

A 1-month safari in Tanzania these days, all-in to include charters, trophy fees, gratuities, etc. would easily be over $100,000.00, even more if Masailand is included.

There never was an era when an American could safari for a month in Africa for $690.

Similarly, there was never an era when George Herter was not making things up.

In 1968 I estimated the cost for a one month safari at $15,000. My annual salary at that time was $13,000

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

Maybe 10 years ago (or more) I bought a safari for myself and three of my brothers. My two older brothers both had cancer and I had hoped to get them on Safari before they passed. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. As I recall I had less than $20K invested.

I prefer classic.

Like some other "mature" hunters, I still have an old Herter's catalog, if I recall correctly from 1974. That was when Herter's moved to Mitchell, South Dakota, and I lived 80 miles from Mitchell for a couple years. Drove to their retail store and still have some of that stuff, including a good backpacking tent.

But I also kept the catalog because GL Herter was one of the greatest American BS/fiction writers of his generation....

An old guy at my yacht club had a Herters fiberglass skiff that got beat up pretty bad from a tropical storm. Had a hole 18 inches in diameter just above the waterline. He actually fixed it and used it for years after.

We liked their popping plugs that came without paint or hooks. You set them up yourself, and we caught a ton of blues and striped bass with them. Still have a couple.
