VG congrats on such a nice and unusual find. I have two 617's both no dash a 4 and 6 inch. I sold a 6 inch about a year ago for twice what you paid so you got a really good deal. You might consider asking about the extra barrel over on the S&W forum. Both of my 617's are very accurate guns and I'm sure yours
will be as well

GSPfan: Thanks for the S&W Forum tip - I mostly want to know the value it adds to my 617?
Maybe a hundred dollars?
Please chime in if you have any idea - I bet Exchipy knows what they cost from the factory.
Hope he chimes in.
My other S&W 617 is a "dash six" model with a 4" barrel - I think it is a "lock model" and I have NOT warmed up to it. I got it at such a giveaway price I held my nose (over the hillary hole lock) and bought it - thinking I would use it as trading fodder at a gunshow for a "pre-lock" 617.
More later - dinner bell!

Nice pick up…

I would consider $100 as a more than fair price, a 4.125” is $169 at Midway.

I have one 617-6 too, no more for me either. The new production S&W’s I’ve looked at recently were terrible.

I live in an area that is devoid of good gun shops. I don't know if that is a good thing or bad thing. Good score VG. I enjoy your gun store exploits. I am glad you take time out to share them.

I would think the added value would be between $100-150. Most folks me included would never change the barrels. I have a couple of SXS shotguns that the extra barrel set has never been on the gun.

PaulBarnard: You are most welcome for the kind words.
I meant to ask on your photo threads what state you are in for those nature photos?
Also, I did NOT see you entered in this years 150 mile "RATPOD" bicycle race (Ride Around The Pioneers in One Day!) here in SW Montana this past summer?
Are you a pansy?
Naw just funnin ya - I could NOT make the first 15 miles of this enduro type race. The race circles the Pioneer Mountain Range of the Rocky Mountains and ascends and descends two major passes of the Rockies (Badger Pass 6,760' elevation and Big Hole Pass 7,400' elevation)!
I used to go drive along the route the bike racers take just to watch the "flatlanders" puking along the highway and laying on their backs in the grass exhausted - he-he.
Be careful on your pavement biking - there is danger there.

GSPfan: I am with you on the non-barrel swappings for my gun interests.
Need another barrel length for your uses - buy another gun!
Thank you for the appraisal - I had/have NO clue.

I am in Crested Butte CO. Most of the animals are in the Gunnison National Forest. I am too much of a pussy to ride that ride.
