Lucked into an old remington 700 in 30-06. Ordered up a shilen number 2 stainless .284 barrel. I decided to go with a 9 twist select match. I will primarily run 140s through it. I'm having the receiver and bolt cerekoted and the barrel finished at 24". Gonna have it put into an adl stock and put leupold backcountry mounts on it. Topping it off with a vx3hd 10 power with illumination and cds. I decided on 280 remington. I've never owned one before and my local gun shop has about 30 boxes of 140 core lokts. BTW, I'm gonna have it stenciled 7mm Express to be different. I have about 5 pounds of h4831. Anyone use that powder with a 140 or 150?

The 280’s I’ve owned seemed to prefer R19 and IMR4831 with 140-150 grain bullets.

My dad loads 59 grs of H4831 and 140 gr. Noslers in his NULA. He has killed several mule deer and a bunch of white tails with it.

That's the same load I shoot with a 130 in a .270. Makes things easy!

I use H4831SC in my 7600 with 145 LRXs as well. Right near 3k and excellent accuracy as well.

Ha. So basically I got the barreled action kinda right. I'll throw it in a mcmillian when I get a chance. As far as the scope, I like those hd3s.

I have a Rem 700 Custom KS Mountain Rifle in.280. On of my loads is a 140 Accubond over H4831. It shoots well in my rifle.

My 280 is partial to 154 SST's and IMR 7828, the pic shows 57 grs but it's actually 58.5 grs

I'm really not trying to go overboard on this one. I just need a good toss in the truck and shoot does rifle mainly. That'll be 90 percent of this guns purpose. I'll put it in a better stock and bed it if need be. I'd like to maybe kill an antelope with it in a few weeks too. Hope it'll take my 30-06s place.

Mine is a 700 that is stamped 7MM Express from the factory.
H4831SC and Hornady 139s have been punching deer tags since 1994 when I bought it

i would bet 60 gr of H4831 with a 140 gr. bullet of your choice will shoot damned well

H4350 has performed well for me with 154gr bullets and lighter in the 280 Rem. My 22" barrel performs a little
better with slightly quicker powders in my tests.

My most accurate 280 loads were using H4350 & H4831, both are 1/4 MOA.

Great cartridge choice! If a man could be happy with one rifle, he could be happy with a 280.

This is the load I use in my '09 Mauser. I don't run it real hot because of the age of the action. I'm pretty sure it wasn't reheat treated.

yes a 1909 Argentine. I bought the barreled action here . Later the same guy sold me the Brown precision stock.

It's a money pit. Had a gunsmith member here named Jkob redo the headspace, recontour the receiver fix a miss drilled hole. Redo the bolt handle. Had the wrong Timney trigger in it also.

My "great deal" on a '09 Argentine turned into a money pit. You win some you loose some.

Maybe you spent a little more than you thought. Like Tom says "happens" to be short, but you have one hell of a rifle and exactly what you want.

Scotty,
I have wanted a M725 in 280 since I saw one for sale in a hardware store on State Street in Salt Lake UT. It was new so that will give you some idea of when that happened.

The 280 was my favorite general purpose chambering. Actually I still believe that it is slightly superior to the 270W but availability of ammo and brass favors the 270W.

I believe that Warren Page chose that rifle for his son’s use.

Big fan of the 280 Rem for years. The 280 Rem short fall comes at the expense of factory loads, IMHO. Mfrs have to be concerned about the possibility of rounds being fired out of the Rem 742. That said, my experience with factory 280 Rem loads has shown them to be somewhat anemic. The 280 Rem is best in the hands of a reloader.
But.... if I'm going to reload the 280 Rem, I'm gonna give serious consideration to the 280 Ackley.

i load 59.1 gr of h4831 behind either 140 NBTs or 140 partitons. POI/POA is the same for both bullets out of my m70 FWt. I havent had a deer or blackbear take a step after being hit with either

FUNNY fhuqking schit, that someone can fhuqk up a 280 so badly,as to turn it into a 264 Kreed LITE. Hint.

Pass the 21" spout,.697 BC's at 2700fps and hold the Long Action Fluff. Hint.

Fhuqking LAUGHING!............

I did. Now, I love the Ackley as much as I originally did the 280. Going forward, it’s the Ackley for me.

My 280 is a Kimber SA and with 140gr NAB it's a toss up between H4831 and R19. It's nice to have two powders that work so well.

Update on the 7 express. My son killed a good whitetail with it, a few does and I shot a 27 inch wide 3x4 mulie. Sons kill was at about 240 and mine was at about 125.

Stick is gonna love this one.
I'm loading A4350 and a 139 sst. My rifle is shooting my load at 3010 fps. It's a 3/4 inch gun with that load. I've noticed that upon entry that bullet violently comes apart like a vmax. I've had a couple blow throughs on does but both bucks the bullet was removed on the offside under the skin. Pretty typical of an interlock or a tipped interlock that they call an sst. Bullets perform as they should, but they kinda spook me. I may go to a gmx or cx. I've never shot an all copper bullet, but from what I've seen on an sst, elk is definitely out for me and that chambering. I'm not real excited about an eldx either. Our special doe days start next week, so I'm gonna test out some gmx bullets and see what they are about. If your a gmx user, let me know what you think in a 280.

SST and Interlock are nowhere near the same bullet. I would not waste my time with SST's. The SST (lack of performance) is no indicator of the 280's capability.

I like the interlock better, but I think a sst is pretty much an interlock with a tip, from what can see. I may run some 160 to 175s through it and see what happens. I still wanna give that 150 gmx a try.

160g-162g
Max load of IMR 7828
Fed 210 primer is an absolute must for tiny, tiny groups
Win brass if you can find it
2930 fps is the accuracy node in my remingtons

Don't forget the Federal 210, this is important!

180g ELDM
R#17
2700+
Win brass, Fed 215
if you run Lapua brass, you cannot kill the brass.
This load is worth building a rifle around!

MOST forget impact velocity

IMR 7828 with the Fed 210, Win brass, with 162's, a load right out of the Nosler #3 &#4 manual's most accurate load, I shot this is 4 different Rem 700s, partitions, sierra btsp, and ELD's. Federal 210 primer holds the key to the fine accuracy, while other primers just blow the groups.

Most can not get their head wrapped around the 180 ELDM in Lapua brass in the 280 case, but 2700+ is real world with .796 advertised bc. The 280 with 180s combo makes you want to get rid of a lot of other crap.
