This book is good. It is the latest Longmire book and was released Sept. 5. In it Longmire is back to being a sheriff and this one isn't about Indian spiritual things but money and crime. In it Longmire finds an old, lost rifle. A Weatherby-- early and from the 1940's, when they were on Mauser actions and unnumbered to boot. Back when firearms didn't require numbers on receivers. This rifle is in 300 H&H, a calber that was not really common but was around. And, as Longmire looks into things there was an elk hunter shot with a 300 H&H back in 1948 at his grandfather's elk camp. But the rifle never turned up until found by Longmire 75 years later. Who owned the rifle? Could it even be determined? And what happened to the others on the hunt, and thay are all important figures in the state. Thus begins a tale of maybe lost evidence and the search for information.

And then murders or attempted murders start happening. What could be the link to crimes (or accidents) of that long ago? Could it be money? Or something else.

This is Johnson bringing us back to law and order with good guys, dubious guys and bad guys.

Worth a read!

Just downloaded it on Audible.

Six hour trip to the lease and six hours back.Be there through Thursday.

No internet or signal so audio books work great.

Hope it's a good read, I tired out with Book 8.

Will give it a try.

Ya!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd gotten kind of burned out on the series. This one starts out talking about Elmer Keith as inspiration so fingers crossed. Audible is kind of like crack cocaine for book lovers wink

I'll add that a trip to the new Weatherby location near Sheridan is included and they help immensely with the investigation. And the info shores up Longmire's opinion of a family member.

Thanks for the info I'll give it a try. What 2ndwind said, "kind of burned out with the series". Too much improbable spiritual/vision, etc. bs.

Yes. I was tired of those, too, and I was leery of this one but it turned out to be worth reading.

You're right, worth a read, good plot with plenty of action including corrupt bureaucrats and politicians too.
