I suspect the trainer gave the hand signal and was just a bit late with the whistle. Looks like a good place to train. I agree that steadiness is job 1 for the trainer. The desire to retrieve comes in the dog. Channeling it is our job.

None of us know what happened, just watched a video. It's not clean, that's for sure.

I know. I just like to give a guy, and especially a dog, the benefit of the doubt.

Yep. This was pre-school with hand signals with her. I sit her in the field with dummies to her right, left and center field. It’s baseball and she’s on the pitcher’s mound.

I train this in a field with no cover at first till she learns the game

In the video, I get her attention and give her a slow hand signal before the whistle and voice command. She saw the hand signal and broke before the whistle. I hit it as soon as possible seeing her break. She was just learning and was excited, having fun.

I want training to be fun for both of us, so corrections usually are just withholding praise. She has responded well to this

I’m not competing in field trials.

Speaking of field trials, any dog guy with time should check out British field trial videos on YouTube. Very different than American trials and geared more towards gundog skills.

Got a new black bitch coming into duck camp this fall. She's 15 months, running good blinds, steady, has the drive and gun fire only excites her. She'll be a good one. Always fun to have a new dog in camp.

Two short blind retrieves for Ruby today. Both in pretty heavy cover. A Black Duck and a Woody. She’s steady as a rock, but that’s easy from a slightly elevated dog blind. Good delivery to hand. Things are looking good for this young dog.

Glad to here it WMR mine still has a bunch of puppy in her at 4.5 months. She's got a good nose and pretty good balance she had her 3rd ride on my Honda rancher yesterday
She prefers to stand and balance. Got advice from huntsman 22 on that. Mb
