I found this bullet in my elk this year. About 1.5" under the skin in the left hind quarter. The hole in the skin was healed but the area around the bullet was "bruised". The bullet is a .338 caliber and weighs 211.8 gr as it is. I'm just curious what bullet I should never use....

I don't think the bullet was the problem.

We also don't know from how far away the bullet was fired.

A boat tail 338 around 215‐225gr?
Shouldn't be too hard to find if you GAS.

In the forward end of the bullet, did it have a spot for a plastic type tip?
At first glance, I was thinking a Speer bullet.
I hope you find out, what you have.

Looks like it had a plastic tip at one time. I'll hazard a guess (tentative, at that) a 225 gr. Accubond fired from way too far away.

Mule Deer might know
Though Sierra makes a 215-gr game king

Pretty sure if it was grand slam (it's not) it would have "GS" on the heel. ETA. Also never seen a boat tail GS.

I’d ask in the “Long Range Hunting” forums.
Looks like their kind of work.

I agree that it was fired from way too far away... that's obvious.
It has a lead core and no room for a plastic tip, which narrows it down a bit.
I'm thinking a match bullet of some variety.
Sierra Match King is 250 gr
Smallest Berger in .338 is also 250 gr
Nosler doesn't have anything that fits the description either...

Usually, match bullets have a smaller diameter opening at the tip, which is why I thought a shed plastic tip. if it's lead to the front of the jacket, it may be the 215 Sierra game king. It matches the profile/boattail angle, but I've never removed the lead tip to look at the front of the jacket.
