I call that a great first effort, stx! Congrats!

I am just starting as well and happen to have the same furnace that you have. Been making a few out of circular saw blades and a broken band saw blade from a friend's portable sawmill. I also bought that same pack of four pieces of 1095 steel but have yet to make anything from them. My first efforts have been 'user' knives with little regard to looks. It's just fun!

I've found 5160 a lot more forgiving of home tempering than 1095 and it is amazingly good steel for any of my purposes than.
I've made bowies out of it that would chop through an arm size piece of firewood and still shave hair after. Give it a try if your 1095 tests don't perform as you would like.

A 4"-6" square bar of solid bar steel makes a lot better anvil than trying to use RR track. You mount it vertical and pound the square end. Google Japanese anvil.

You guys have a link to that forge?

My first thought though was “like you already weren’t busy as a cat burying sheet”

I’m liking it. With a bit larger one, the Nilgai won’t!!
