Are any of you even buying anything? I like to see a show and tell. Time for a new thread anyway. Show us what you have bought recently. Seems I share a lot of what I buy. Now it's your turn... As some of you know, there are some pretty good deals out there right now.

Hell, the guy that was selling (I mean giving away) the customized FN SPR in the Mcmillan here, couldn't even give his damn rifle away with ammo. What's this world coming to? I was ready to make a drive down and buy that rifle, if need be. Good thing someone bought it yesterday, after I got home from Reno!! That rifle was well worth $2,000.00+ with the ammo he was throwing in.

Don't know whether it's a sign of the economic times, a generation croaking, cowboy action slowing down, or what...but some beautiful well maintained vintage leverguns and revolvers are trickling into the market now, and at prices far more attractive than ten years back.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

True for common, run of the mill guns.
Collectible, high condition Winchesters are commanding as much as, or more $’s at auction than they ever did

The last couple things I bought are Colt revolvers and a Ballard and a Remington single shots. Figured y'all wouldn't want to see them!

The only recent purchase of a Winchester was this M70 in 270 WSM that I posted a bit ago. I gave $430 for it as shown with the Weaver scope and a couple boxes of ammo short some in one. You were kind enough to send me brass and DD bases. I hope to get it out this week.

Man, you stole that one. I hope it shoots like a house afire!! Good luck with it. Have you taken it out of the stock yet? Remember, if it does not shoot up to par, that damn hot glue bedding may be suspect. Some of my stainless classics looked like this:

Nice looking pre war. Hasn't been drilled and tapped either? That is a good thing, if you want it to be more collectable. I agree about using them too. I think sometimes I have a problem. I fine tune them, so they shoot lights out, then move on to the next one. Guaranteed, every rifle in the safe shoots lights out though...

I'm kind of a stickler on how a rifle shoots. The last one I bought so my girlfriend would have a good Winchester model 70 next year when we go hunting together. Since it is basically her rifle, I skimped a bit. Then thinking about some guys that never glass bed their rifles, I ran a test I used to do when I was young and dumb. Test after each thing I did. First shoot it, then freefloat it, then touch up the bedding. Well, [bleep], I should have just did everything right up front like I normally do!!! This is something you learn over time: Experience!!! Procrastinating and not doing things right the first time always takes more time, components, and energy. I know there are a lot of guys that don't believe in doing all the work before shooting it, but I've seen the benefits more than a 100 times. If a rifle is glass bedded and fine tuned, it is going to shoot better. End of story..

The local Cabelas has a classic stainless in 325 WSM for <$500. It is fluted with the synthetic stock. I took a quick look at it but I have no use for it or the action. I had a Kimber Montana in 325 and I really liked it but I could read the writing on the wall regarding ammo and I knew that like most new fangled offerings from Winchester it wasn’t long for this world. I sold it and bought a stainless Sako A7 in .308 figuring that at least Winchester wouldn’t likely dump the .308 like they do everything else.

Between 338’s and 35 Whelens I don’t need another caliber to feed, especially an oddball like the 325.

Classic stainless was never fluted, so if factory it is something else. Is it a full stainless? Maybe extreme weather if so.

Nope, not drilled and tapped. None of my pre-wars are. If they are "altered" then they don't interest me. This one does have a Tilden safety and I let that slide being era correct. I really need to take more of these out hunting. I did hunt with the 53 308 and peep sight last year. I would LOVE to hunt my pre-war 300 with a receiver sight but I just can't see the sights well enough anymore.

Very cool man. I noticed the Tilden safety as well. That is a cool piece of Americana there. I'd enjoy it just the way it is.. Thanks for sharing with us..

Sounds like an Extreme Weather to me. Good guns, and worth more then $500, even in 325 WSM.

That is a damn good deal. The lowest I've seen an EW 325 was $600, and it was in like new condition.

Yes, $500 would be a great deal.

They also made the coyote light in 325 WSM; but the receiver is cm.

$500 would be like stealing it, huh buddy. I remember thinking I should have bought the 325 wsm EW for $600 a couple years ago. They are good rifles, and I had plenty of 8mm bullets at the time. Shoulda woulda..

I would not have been able to walk by it for 500..

I couldn't pass the CDNN 325's when they were around 600 bucks. Darned rifle is a hammer and I have 0 use for it.

I have not taken it apart yet but did pick up a walnut stock here a month or so ago priced well. I am sure a bed job will be required either way. Currently fiddling with a 6.5 Creedmoor M700 ADL and an early 270 Win M700 Ti...

I’ve been on more of a scope bender lately having bought three or four in the last couple of months.

I found a good deal on the ‘bay for a VX-II 6-18x40 with duplex reticle, so upgraded to that on my .220 Swift.

Bought a NIB VX-3HD 4.5-14x40 CDS with 30mm tube and windplex reticle for my Remington 700 .25-06!

Took an old Bausch and Lomb Balvar 2.5-8x with Savage 99 mounts in a trade. That one’s going to end up on the classifieds once I get it cleaned up for pictures.

Took an M7b-4x off of my old 7x57 Mauser to replace it with a newer M8-6x but put the M7b back on as it was a better fit. 🤷‍♂️

I better get back to buying guns soon!

I seem to buy guns with scopes on top for some reason. Then I sell the scopes, if they serve no use for my needs. Closer to the beginning of the year, I ran across 2 older Vari-XIIc 3-9X40 rifle scopes for cheap. One was a gloss black and the other a silver Leupold. I still have both of them. One is on a rifle I bought a few months ago:
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

The older gloss Leupolds just look good on the pre 64's. I plan on keeping this one on the 270 std wt pictured, until it goes belly up. It should be good for a good while though. However, because it doesn't have a useable reticle and I don't trust it to dial, it's very limited. Boy, that's going to pizz some people off!!! Yeah, it's no good for my usual 400 yard range. But it is what it is.
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

The rifle shoots great at 100 yards, so it's kind of a shame..

I apologize, I call any of the newer ones with the full length extractors “classics”. It is full stainless.

Those first year rifles were pretty sweet. That was when BACO/FN Herstal was really wanting to impress us with the new model 70. This was a gem I found at a local small town gunshow about 8 years ago.

I think the intent of the seller was to sell it to a new young hunter. Not to tear it apart because its cheap and a good deal.

Ah okay. I didn't know the seller, so I didn't read into it. I usually don't read the epilogues of ads unless its something I am planning to buy for myself whistle

It's a Browning. Not like a guy is tearing apart a Pre-64.

Heck, they're just running a reamer through the bore and putting some new rifling in it. You'll barely notice grin

I hit up the gun show circuit pretty regularly in my neck of the woods. I'm pretty envious of the finds that people post on here. I can count on 1 hand how many shows were worth going to. I think I've only bought one gun over the past year at a show. (I've bought A LOT online)... It's the same people with the same crap at all of the local shows in Wisconsin. The shows are tiny, you can walk through them in 10 minutes, despite the $8 entry fee. 50% of the tables are AR-15's. It's amazing to me how most of the guys don't know anything about what is actually on their table. I had to educate a guy at the last show on what he had, as he was advertising it as an "original pre 64 Model 70". It had an aftermarket stock and was chambered for a Weatherby...

I'll keep showing up hoping to find a diamond in the rough.

Good luck. Something should pop up. I was told about a fairly original pre 64 270 fwt locally for $750.00. But having just bought 2 270's a while back on the same day, I'm all 270'd out right now. Had to pass on that one.

I could care less if it were a Browning or a pre 64. The guy is wanting it to go to a young hunter. That is why he has it priced so low. You guys can buy it if you want, but I see it as bad mojo, if you are buying for personal gain when the sellers intention is pure. It's like bragging about buying a pre 64 supergrade from a widow and paying her $300 for it. I just don't do that kind of schidt. Carry on though.

Yep I agree Lawrence, I giving more rifles away to new hunters and kids over the years. One was my SIL she got into hunting with her boyfriend now husband. Gave her a classic model 70 featherweight in a 270 W. Man she’s killed 2 elk with it couple mule deer. Her husband wanted a Winchester bad, so I worked a trade with AkWolverine for a stainless classic in a 270W. This year he shot his deer and elk with it he was beaming from ear to ear. My buddy in Montana his son was doing great in school, I sent him a 270 W in a model 70 pf that kid was smiling ear to ear. I tell people life is too short not to own a model 70 😁.

So true. My current only .270 is a Browning BBR. My only problem with it? It’s not a Model 70!

I like it! Passing on the gospel of the M70 270...

And I don't sweat it too much, my kids all get my rifles anyhow, so between the 2 year old and 25 year old, I feel okay buying a rifle for a kid, even if Dad gets to shoot it a bit first whistle

This was laying on a table next to some other really nice rifles, but it was screaming at me. I picked it up and was told it was a 22 Hornet. After careful examination I could see it was a pre-64 model 70 22 Hornet action that had been skillfully cut down to a 22 Hornet length cartridge.

I bought it and showed it to Monte Mandarino and Dennis Olson, both very accomplished Gun makers to see if they could recognize the work. They both had some ideas, but nothing for certain.

When Steven Dodd Hughes (SDH here on the Campfire) looked at it, he was also impressed with the workmanship and wanted to look at it closer.

I left it with him and he called me later and told me he had gotten it out of the stock. He also told me I had hit a grand slam with this rifle, as it was made by Stephen Heilman, an exceptional custom gun maker.

The attention to detail can’t be shown in photographs, but this is an unbelievably well built custom rifle. I am always thankful for the guys that don’t go to gun shows because they can’t find anything worth buying any more…

Hopefully you are GETTING Pre64's and getting RID of black guns. If it is the other way around, please go sit in the corner with your nose against the wall. smile

I purchased a Daniel DefenseV v.1 308 Win Hunter for 1250.00 about three years ago. A Pre64 Winchester Model 70 Alaskan showed up and the LGS went for it. Probably because I buy a lot of guns from them.
