Have you shot it before?

I had one and love it but it patterned. I tried to get it to shoot but never good. That was before I reloaded though. I lost interested after it wouldn’t come around.

All you need to do is go to this site, click on choose image and then follow the instructions. If you can load your Ruger you should be able to post pictures.

Nice.

Mine has the rotary mag. Full power loads cycle in it just fine, but it doesn't like anything else.

Minute of pie plate, of course, but it's fun to shoot. grin

I had a first year of manufacture Ruger Deerstalker S/N 1011, it was fun to shoot but only "pie plate" accurate. I now have a Remington 788 .44 Magnum and it shoots like a laser beam, nice tight 3 shot clusters @ 100 yards with my handloads.

That's a tough one to get, congrats. Doesn't surprise me it shoots. Been my experience it's tough to find a 788 that doesn't.

I used to have one, and mounted a Redfield 2.75x scope on it, and it would group about 2" to 2.25" at 100 yds with my handloads. It liked a stiff load of H110 or WW296 with a 240 gr Speer jacketed soft pt. Lost it in a divorce...

I have a Ruger 44 carbine that was manufactured in 1967. I wanted one since I was a kid. My buddies Dad was selling off his guns because he was getting up in his years. I bought it for $400. Probably never part with it. I’ll give it to my son at some point.

When I was a kid I was fascinated by the Ruger ads for the .44 carbine. The first one I saw, a very early one, was owned by the grandfather of the yet unborn girl who would become my wife. He had a sporting goods and marine business and always liked to have the latest and greatest thing on the market. My brother-in-law has that one now.

When I was home on leave from the Navy in 1968 I, of course, had to pay a visit to the lgs. There was a Ruger .44 carbine on the used gun rack, the receiver sight model, for $70. It has a 4 digit serial number so it must be a pretty early one.

Several years later, after my adventures in far off lands, I finally got to play with it. Accuracy, as many have noted, was disappointing. Then in Rifle or Handloader (back when they had useful, do it yourself articles) was an article about "accurizing" the Ruger .44 carbine. Long story short, when I glass-bedded the gas block in the forend and made sure the shotgun style through-bolt in the buttstock was cranked down tight enough to remove any slop caused by shrinkage of the stock wood, it shot more than accurately enough for the type of use it was intended for.

I killed my nicest racked buck thus far with it, only because it is so fast handling. i also killed what I think is the biggest buck I ever killed with it, 208 lb dressed, after hanging for a week and, i'm sure, drying out some. That deer was almost a 200 yard shot which I wouldn't have attempted before accurizing it.

Like all my .44 magnum revolvers, it works well with 240 grain XTPs and 23.3 grains of H-110.

I don't use it much now, it's currently in my son's custody in Missouri, but it's on the list to come back with me next trip out there.

If you have a Ruger 44 carbine that won't shoot to your satisfaction, you might want to consider calling Rody's Gun Shop in Newport, NH, as they are reputed to be able to make Rugers shoot that others have given up on.

I've had a 44 International since 1968/69, #1224xx, that was made in 1967.

It isn't cutting edge accurate, but it will allow me to reliably hit apples and oranges at 100 yards as quickly as I can acquire the target and squeeze the trigger. The 240 grain JSP factory loads work well and punch a big hole in a game animal. I've probably kill at least 2 dozen whitetails with it, some required only 1 shot, while others required more, but all of the whitetails that I shot with it made the trip to the meat locker. It originally had a Weaver K3 installed, but now has an old Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5x20 in those awful Redfield turn-in mounts. It is short, light, and points well, so it works well when I still hunting in heavy cover.
