By changing it before it gives is about it.

In my experience they'll wobble at speed when it's time to go.
I've had them squeak at low speed and in time with driveline speed when they are dry.
I can usually find a replacement with a Zerk fitting.

Not exactly sure how the ford oil flow path is, but when I lunched a rurbo on my 7.3 I thought she was done for sure. I dropped a new KC stage 2 in and it was good as new.

Hopefully the metal just came down the turbo return line.
