Anyone with experience in rebuilding or replacing a 6.7?
Had a service truck take a crap on the side of the highway the other day. Mechanic finally looked at it. Pulled the filter and said a bunch of metal in there. Engine is doa.
Starting to think about options.

Sorry. Forgot that Ram has a 6.7 also.
It is a 2012 ford.

It sounds like a classic CP.4 failure. The engine probably isn’t toast but the entire fuel system is. I’m not familiar with Fords, but for a Chevy the repair runs around $10,000.
Edit to add: by pull the filter do you mean the fuel filter or the oil filter? A CP.4 failure wouldn’t fill the oil filter with metal, but it could conceivably fill the fuel filter (not 100% on this as I don’t know the Ford fuel system).

Sorry to hear it. Sounds like more than a fuel pump failure.

Catastrophic failure. Sorry to read that.
Will follow this. Hope you update as you make decisions.

It's a ford tradition, to die in the most awful of places. Ole boy from Texas was towing an enormous 5th wheel and died on the steepest section of hill from Fairbanksn AK to the Canadian border. It was a new 6.7. One guy over-heated his torque convertor trying to pull him 5 ft. Was a 1/2 ton truck. I hooked up, locked in 4 low with the ole 7.3. Ford guys always have sympathy for other Ford guys. I did damage 1 front axle u-joint towing him up a hill to a safe pull-over. Not impressed with that shiny new truck.

Got the truck drug over and put in the back of my shop for now.
On the hunt for a decent replacement motor. To replace with most everything new, the local mechanic quoted me over $22k.

I would get on one of the Ford powerstroke forums and talk to the guys there, but how many miles on the truck/engine?

How did you manage to damage a U-Joint on pavement? Were you making tight turns in 4WD? What was actually damaged on the TX truck?

No idea what caused the found on road dead, the blue oval maybe? A tow truck designed to tow big rigs towed them to Fairbanks 20+ year old front axle u-joints. Heard a clicking turning into the turn off. One of the 4 caps was bone dry, no grease.

20 year old u-joint. Hardly a Ford issue.

Mechanic report stated that the turbo failed and lost a vane/vanes. And that there was considerable metal in the oil when he pulled the filter.
Not sure if the turbo ultimately caused the entire issue or not.
Now to figure out the best path forward.
I had another 6.7 have a turbo failure a couple years back. When that happened, I recall reading about how these turbos with ceramic bearings were problems. Wondering about proactively putting a newer turbo on another 6.7 I have???

Tarkio, talk to kc turbos if you decide not to sell yer truck.
They specialize in ford super-duty turbos. I used one of their kits to rebuild/improve the turbo on my 7.3.
Ended up with a 360 degree bearing, as opposed to a 270 degree bearing.
Also, the billet compressor wheel and turbine wheel geometry was way better than stock. This combined with a banks big-head wastegste that is set to just start opening at 28 psi, the improvements made a big difference.
Weird turbo-fart noises though: when u crest a hill towing heavy, the tranmission shifts back to 1600-1700 rpms at 60mph. There's more boost in the plenum than the engine requires. Buts it's less than the wastegate will open at.
So the boost comes out of the air filter. It sounds EXACTLY like Darth Vader. So I have named the truck Garth Vader, because it's like country music to my simple mind, haha!

I've had them squeak at low speed and in time with driveline speed when they are dry. I can usually find a replacement with a Zerk fitting.

Not exactly sure how the ford oil flow path is, but when I lunched a rurbo on my 7.3 I thought she was done for sure. I dropped a new KC stage 2 in and it was good as new.
Hopefully the metal just came down the turbo return line.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.
