I’m watching a 20 year old episode of Top Chef, and someone says he’s going to prepare twice baked potatoes. Never heard of that, so I pull out my iPhone and planned to search “twice baked potatoes.” All I had to do was type most of the word “twice,” and Google suggests “twice baked potato.” Top suggestion. How did Google know that’s what I wanted to know about? Is that what’s suggested when you type twic into Google?
I was bitching about our senator John Tester to wifey , next thing I know Tester campaign ads start showing up.... so the answer to your question Hawk is the algorithms are listening through hour phone.... now when things get real and it's time to herd the maga people into the boxcars your phone will give you up!

I do think there's some spying on us via our phones and computers. However, I assure you that I have not even thought of twice Baked potatoes in a while prior to see this post. So I went to Google and typed in "twic" and "twice Baked potatoes" popped up. I'm guessing it's just a common search item.

I wondered if that might be the case, which is why I asked. Interesting. Thanks for trying it.

Brother Hawk.... I would not dismiss it so easily....

I've literally never experienced that, so can't hep ya.
I have literally experienced it a few times over the years.... it's very creepy

Brother Fubar; Good evening and almost Thanksgiving to you and yours, I hope the day treated you all well.
In the "for what it's worth" file, my good wife's phone usually is connected to the house wifi system and it's happened multiple times that we've been chatting about something and it'll appear on her FaceBook feed for sure. Possibly other places too, but in that forum it has happened.
Since I don't use my phone for much other than taking pictures or finding the pickup with a hunting GPS app, that's not happened to me, but i do get a monthly report telling me where I've been from some other app that I want to say came with the phone.
I believe that anytime I use that hunting app, they - whomever they might be - are able to track my movements or so I've been given to understand.
As a last bit of tid on the subject, a few of my more tech savvy friends always have any built in computer cameras covered unless they're using them. When I asked them about it, they were of the belief the cameras could be activated remotely in some instances.
On that one I'm not sure and am only repeating what I've been told.
This morning on our way up hunting, my friend, next door neighbor and hunting partner reported seeing an add while watching hockey that the new Hyundai will be able to be started with a phone app of some sort.
Neither one of us is tech savvy to be sure, but both of us saw a multitude of problems with that.
Anyways Brother Fubar, regardless of the technological advances which seem to surround us both for good and at times seemingly evil, I do hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving down there.
Extensive monitoring of cell choices for one thing. And extensive uses of abilities I am not aware of. I began paying attention when a conversation with my wife about some product or service while driving resulted in an immediate spam on my cell phone. Preference detection is literally the tip of this iceberg.

I have. I typed in "twic" and "twice baked potatoes" popped up first. Search engine algorithms also use what's trending and most popular searches to fill in the blanks. I'd guess this time of year lots of people are searching up potato recipes
Having said that, I've had experiences where we were discussing something, typed in a few letters, and what we were discussing popped up. And there's no way it was a frequently used search.
I sent an email containing info for a K9 handler, first time ever. RIGHT after that I got onto facebook and the line of "people you should know" pops up, with you know who in first place. F u c k i n g spooky......

My wife and I mess with the snoopers all the time. We get ads to improve our love life(its great), repair our relationship( nothing to fix), and more. Put some noise in our files at the data center…

Same.
I’ve also had music recommended for me on YouTube (owned by Google) based off of what someone else was playing at work in the background.
Meijer. A Michigan based store similar to Walmart mails me coupons based off of what I’ve bought in the past and paid for with a debit card. I don’t have an account or any links with Meijer other than paying with a debit card but they can trace it back to me and mail me coupons tailored to items I bought and mail separate coupons to my wife based on what she buys.
The store must keep a digital receipt of items purchased and the banks sell the contact info to the store but it makes you wonder who else they sell it to or is looking at it.
People will read a thread like this. Understand what's going on and then in 3 weeks post about how the campfire is running gay porno ads, selling anal bleach and man panties whenever they log in and never make the connection.
Adamant that it's Rick making money and not what's either on their phone or discussed in the home. Nope. Outside of those topics - being spied upon. Those topics are a mistake or native to the site....

That's strange, all I see is ads for guns, fishing gear, and heterosexual stuff.
