Homestead Gun Parts carries John Kay’s original formula Winchester red/brown stain This is a great product that comes closer to a factory finish, than any other product I’ve seen. If you are willing to take the time that the instructions call for, you’ll be very happy with the outcome.

The material used to fill the pores in the pre64 stocks before applying the finish is significantly responsible for the characteristic Winchester warm brown/red color. Remnants of this dark brown/black slurry are typically found in the inlet and around its’ borders.

I’ve had to use this on a 1873 that had paint on the butt stock and it worked great. Follow their instructions and be patient and it will look great.
