cool I’m not gonna try and debate what constitutes a truck. Please keep your comments about that to yourself. This post is purely to point out differences in vehicles.
My ‘10 Ranger needed a new 5 speed, and with Thanksgiving and Pennsylvania Deer season in the mix, I had to run a rental car for transportation for a couple weeks.
Late model Mazda 3, whatever the hell that is. Good on gas, but a hateful little phuqer for a guy who grew up on older cars that did what you told them to do. This little bitch drove me crazy…🤬
Sumbitch has keyless ignition, you carry a little fob in your pocket to use it. Every dang time I got out of it, it locked me out! Stick a gun in the back seat, go grab some targets, get out to pump gas, don’t matter. It thinks you left, and locks itself.
Wanted to hop in and run up to pull my targets after sight in. To go 100 yards on private ground, you gotta fasten your damn seatbelt!
After a week, I figured out how to tune the FM radio by accident!
Worst of all was the freaking automated dimmer switch! Flood light in somebody’s yard would trip it faster than oncoming traffic!😩
I learned to drive in a ‘64 Falcon! Three on the tree, manual steering, no power brakes.
That freakin Mazda made me miss that Falcon!

I thought I did cuss!😀
To be honest, as a believing Christian, my language could be considered a major weakness.
I came about it honestly though.
As a teenager through high school, I worked outta the garage of The Old Man’s Auto salvage. As a young adult, I served as a mechanic slash soldier in the US Army.
Between the two of them, I developed a pretty salty vocabulary!😔
Most of the time I can keep a more or less civil tongue.
But it has sorta become a crutch to me when things go south.
If I’m working on something that ain’t cooperating, I cuss at it.
Drop a wrench? Dammit! Bust a knuckle? Son of a witch!
Usually, I consider it a harmless reflex. I’ll cuss, pick up my wrench or wrap up my wound, and go on with my job. No harm, no foul.
And that little Mazda incited quite a few smaller cussing spats.
“You rotten little scum sucking car you!😀”
But if someone really gets on my bad side when I’m good and mad, I’ve been known to drop quite a few “F” bombs in a hurry. Times like that, I’m probably better off left alone, because I learned from Dad to speak my mind. Careful what you ask me, because I’ll always tell you wether you want the truth or not.
I got reprimanded for saying tolerance can be overdone.
“How is tolerance a bad thing?” I was asked.
I replied that tolerance made us Christians accept gay marriage. 25 years later we have “pride month” where perversity is not just celebrated, but shoved in your freakin face, and your a bad person to call a spade a spade!
So in public, I may very well to tell somebody to go F themselves in no uncertain terms.
Sorry, but I’m just being me. Honesty can be a weakness at times.

I have my eye on a 2020 Highlander Platinum I might buy next week. Has every bell and whistle known to man except that automatic parallel parking thing - which I likely wouldn't use anyway. Half the fun of owning it might be learning all the gizmos.

BTW, if you are even half considering buying, this is THE month to do it. Prices for new and used are collapsing, but that won't last until Spring.

I’m 47, so not a boomer speaking here, but I find the headlights with no “off” setting while the vehicle is running my biggest automotive pet peeve. Dozens of situations come to mind where that would be useful but more and more vehicles have at least some lights on while the engine is running, let alone while moving.

Had a 2023 Caddy CT4 rental for work the last two days. Loaded with “features” but it added zero to my interest in or enjoyment of the car. It needed more engine and less spaceship dash panel. Perfect example of “sure, we can, but should we?”

Perfect, timely example….just turned the rental on to warm it up and went back in to make a coffee. Left the fob in it so it would stop chirping the horn. Came back out between 10 & 15min later to leave and the car is off. 🤪

In the meantime, had a meeting with a customer yesterday and the topic of circularity of their parts after end of life came up and they confirmed it was reasonable to consider using recycled content in new parts even if it lowered the performance and cost more…so great is the drive towards green. Pun intended.

Me too!

I drive it everywhere, no one asks to borrow money and once in awhile I will find a 20 dollar bill on the seat with a sympathy card…

I must admit that the “infotainment centers” do not make things better. Takes 5 seconds for the radio to come on. Does this thing have vacuum tubes?

Newer Cars have entirely too much electronics. I do not like the "safety" systems within them. I ditched a Ridgeline because after 10 months ownership I literally could not stand to drive the car. Some Manufacturers know how to make cars that will be easy to diagnose at repair time, the majority not so much and that can be a really really bad thing especially if a Dealer fixes it out of warranty.

Best idea is to keep a new car for a short time because once it is out of warranty you will really regret ever buying it.

I believe that Caddy has the same engine as the new Chevrolet Silverado. A 2.7 turbo 4 cylinder. When I was talking to the salesman about my new Chevy I told him under no circumstances would I take the 4 cylinder in a work pickup. I did get my V8 and even though the mileage isn't the greatest, I have plenty of power. That engine belongs in the Colorado and not the Silverado.

Plus 1,000 on hating the "nanny state" bells and whistles. Especially Japanese vehicles... I do not need a flashing light in the middle of my dash to tell me that my wind shield washer fluid is getting low. I managed to drive vehicles for 50+ years without dying from lack of windshield washer fluid...

I also do not need a micro switch to tell me my hood might be unlatched. And then flash, bing and beep, every time I take my foot off the brake in stop-and-go rush hour traffic all because... the micro switch chit the bed... mad GMAB !
