I found this belt in a bunch of old stuff and I don’t know what it is.

Any ideas of its origin or use??

Looks like it’s got an adjustment there to me. Maybe a Bandolier?

I believe that it is a Mills... U.S.GI. . I've got two of them plus a reproduction for 12ga. .
One of mine is dirty white like yours... it probably was white for garrison duty or parade. It's loops fit 45/70.
The other is more of a greenish khaki and has loops sewn onto the loops holding twice as many rounds. It fits 30/40.
The two ends will unhook. Oh, the loops on mine are nearly as long as the belts are wide.

The ends will not unhook or allow the belt to be opened. Bandolier seems to be its purpose, there is provision to change the length of the belt but no way to open it…

There is some sort of brass hanger on it as well…

Check this website. Appears to be what teamprairiedog suggests.

Are there any markings on it? Eg "Pat. Mills & Orndorff"? British broad arrow (the British government bought these too, for the Boer war)

I'd be surprised if I'm right but that looks to me like a Boer Wars bandolier.

Not sure which military but definitely old military. Cartridge belts and bandoliers with loops were often canvas to stop verdigris on the brass. That is the green waxy crud you get when brass is against leather for awhile. Canvas was also lighter.

I had a buddy RIP who had a bunch of this stuff. He would have known but I' d guess it is a belt due to the hanger on it. I also suspect there is a way to open it up.

No experience with bandoleers but the hook might be a loose point of attachment to a belt or someplace on clothing to keep the cartridges in the most accessible position. Wouldn't do to be in the thick of battle and find your spare ammunition out of reach on your back.

That is about what I thought...

But no idea really...

Still a cool item.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I'll bet that Custer would have given anything for a wagon load of those.

I wonder if the hook is a frog (correct word ?) for a bayonet or sabre.

A photo from the Boer war. It's hard to see if they're wearing the exact same thing, but they're similar anyway.
