Never heard of lye, always used the powdered lime to keep the smell down.

Slaked lime will do the trick. Other than being extremely powdery, it will keep down flies and odors....and it isn't dangerous to handle.
Lye and unslaked lime can cause "serious" chemical burns. 😳
