With the 84M off the table, who makes a trim light, stainless rifle in .223 or similar cartridge?
And does anyone make such a rifle with a modern twisted barrel with magazine suited for length?

Far as I can tell, Tikka puts their .223s in the same action as the .300 win mag. Sako? Their web site is all about their quality and precision. I looked and couldn't tell what they offer in different sized actions. They are long on talk and short on specs... Looked up the legacy/Howa site and pretty much the same thing. Long on talk, short on specs. Not even a rifle weight listed anywhere...

Sakos suck ass in .378”. Mag confines are Dog Schit. Hint.
Howie Mini’s are better by a mile, yet short of The Finish Line. Hint.
The Montucky stands alone and is without peer, which is why I probably have a “few”. Hint………

Thanks Stick
Got a Montucky in .223 you'd part with? It amazes me that they don't make it anymore...

My current path is building a sub 4lb straight pull AR15. It checks the most boxes. OAL is still short, but otherwise you might look that direction.

I'm in Illinois, and just sold my only AR and my 10-22 to my youngest kid who lives in Iowa. We met at an FFL 6 blocks from his place on Thursday and went through it.
As of January 1st Illinois has legislated that about any semi-auto with a DBM has to be registered with the state.
I'm Gonna Register Dick-All.
I'm also moving out of state and currently looking at houses even more so than rifles...

I think this is pretty much the definition of a reason to do a custom build. I believe that Outkast Arms can put a Howa Mini action into their stock with a blind mag. I know it’s not stainless but it’s still a nice option.

Stick,
I've likely read it, but don't recall. What is your preference for a barrel for the Montucky, if I can find one?

I think there's a lot of us that would jump on a new Kimber .223 Montana..
I do believe we have been enlightened, hint.
Of course, if they reintroduce it odds are they will have fuqked it up!

John, not to be argumentative, but even though Tikka may only make one action length, it is still pretty trim and is one of the best cycling factory actions made. Additionally, the specs are tight enough that you get shouldered prefits for it if you so desire (not that they are needed in most cases). Plus, you can very easily get aftermarket magazines which will allow you to load heavier .22 caliber bullets without sacrificing powder space in the case. Add to that all the aftermarket goodies out there for them and you have a pretty solid case for them without having to go full custom.

I live in the people’s republic of Washington Buy a KaliKey and your evil assault rifle becomes a straight pull bolt gun. Best $120 you’ll spend this year. https://kalikey.com/I'm in Illinois, and just sold my only AR and my 10-22 to my youngest kid who lives in Iowa. Howie’s thus far,are not S/S. The 6 ARC is simply fhuqking sensational, with JO BDL 2.0 metal. Hint.
As Montucky spouts go,I have Rock,PN,Brux,Lilja,Bart’ and Hart. All Skookum and I have lotsa other Makes elsewhere. Hint.
I’ve not sold a rifle in decades, but will trade now and again. Hint…………….

I tried to sell a Troy SPR here a while back. Traded it to a local shop that still has it for a decent deal.
Makes more sense than many things and was fast. Didn’t mesh well with my thermal mount, but for most other stuff, would be great.

Were I starting from scratch, I'd Howa mini, JO bdl, stockys vg, use the barrel for a while and then replace it with stainless.

In the absence of a SS mini actions, you might consider selecting a CM and having it nitrided. That stuff is very tough, penetrates the metal, and protects the bore from wear and corrosion. Think about it; how many rusty Glocks have you seen?
Howa Minis are pretty cheap in basic form, and available as barreled actions from Brownells. Alternately, you could have one rebarreled in SS.
BTW, whatever happened to the outfit that took over the Fieldcrafts?
What fresh Hell is this?

Wilson Combat thought it prudent to fhuqk up the stocks,go BDL and roll Retard Twist Rates. Hint.
Unfortunately it’s pretty fhuqking! Hint………..

Think about it; how many rusty Glocks have you seen? I had a 10mm Glock that I used for dispatching halibut. After a season on the boat, providing Glockoma treatments and periodically getting splashed with saltwater, in the process, it did rust. It still functioned like a Glock, of course, but it definitely got ugly. In the end, I learned that the only thing saltwater won't screw up is saltwater.
Thoroughly enjoying Alaska since 2001.
