Some of you have probably seen pictures and stories from our annual family deer hunts and this year we added a new member to the "family". Layne's best friend Blake has been out on a few bird hunts with us and wanted to try deer hunting, so our focus this year was to help make this happen. Blake's Mom was excited about the possibility of getting some meat for their freezer, too. I did some work in advance to get a rifle ready for him, but due to recent knee surgery and still being on crutches, I let my wife and son take over helping from there. The rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard .270 Win. and I found a load using IMR7828 and 140 gr. Accubonds that it shoots well, so I went to the practice range with Blake then let the three of them head for the woods together yesterday to see what they could do. As you can see from the pictures, they obviously didn't need me along to make memories that will last a lifetime! Blake was ready when a nice buck appeared through the fog and Layne followed up about 20 minutes later when a smaller buck gave him a chance to put some meat in our freezer, too. I can't help but think it would be bad mojo to put a rifle Blake used to kill his first deer back in my safe, so I visited with his Mom after the hunt and we will be making this his rifle for future hunts, too. I am hoping this is just the first of many more deer hunts together for these two young men who are running and fishing buddies, too. Next weekend Blake will be back up to learn how we process them and take meat back home for their family. I don't know if Blake and Layne have thought as far ahead as I have, but the way I see it I might now have two young men along to drag out my buck next year... (Layne's rifle is a Rem. 700 .280 Rem. also shooting 140 gr. Accubonds.)

Congratulations on a couple of nice deer and bringing another into your little hunting group!
I’m a bit envious of your hunting relationship with your son…..don’t have and very likely never will have that experience!
Keep up the good work and strong bond. memtb

Great job on you Proud Dad for bringing Blake into the fold. That's a great buck! Along with providing food for his family I'm quite sure that is a memory that he and ya'll will never forget! Good on ya!

Well done PD and congrats to the young men. Your better half deserves a bunch of credit also. What did you have done to your knee and when?.mb Thanks, guys. Appreciate the kind words and will pass them along, especially to my wife as you are right, so deserves a lot of credit for helping to make this happen, too. They were hunting in the spot where Kelley would have normally been sitting with her rifle, but she chose to just help Blake and Layne there this year. I tore a meniscus in my knee in August and had been putting off surgery as I wanted to be able to get around at cross country meets to watch Layne (and Blake) run this fall. When they did the MRI they also found an area of cartilage missing on the end of my femur, so they did microfracture surgery while they were doing the arthroscopic surgery three weeks ago, too, drilling three small holes in the end of the bone to help fill in the missing cartilage. On crutches for six weeks now with non-weight bearing/no driving restrictions, so I am getting a bit of cabin fever working on my computer from the recliner with ice on my knee. I'll make it, just will be glad to get this part behind me. Thanks for asking.
