Which brand should I be buying? And how hard is the installation? I understand it’s a gunsmith installation but I am wondering if i could do it myself. I am an engineer and I have several machinists working for me, we have access to a state of the art machine shop. I think if I had proper instructions I could pull it off myself.

Myers Arms and Wisner are both good options for 3-position Win M-70 style 3-position safeties for a Mauser M-98. I was able to install mine after watching Jim Wisner’s YouTube video.

If you have the skills and resources available you’ve described you shouldn’t have a problem. Fairly straightforward.

I've always preferred to install a Mark X bolt shroud to remove the ugly Mauser safety and install a trigger like a Timney with a side safety. I've always thought it looked cleaner ... but that's just me...

Do you want a full up 3-position M70 style like this?

or just a simple two position side swing, like this?

Regardless, sounds like you have all the resources to do it yourself. I did the two position side swing pictured above myself with nothin but a drill press and a slitting saw - with what you have available it'll be easy peasy.
Pick what you like and make it happen!

I just gave Jim a call. He’s out at the moment but his wife will have him to call me. Hopefully he has either a 2 or 3 position available now.

I had my Wisner 3 position safety installed on a Mark X action by Jim Wisner I figured the guy that made it ought to be the one that knows most about it and how it works. You need to be concerned about the trigger you use as well as the safety. Perfect Job from Jim.

It already has a nice Timney trigger. I called Jim Kobe today. He had a 2 position safety in stock for the right price. He assured me it would be an easy install job. I mailed him out a check today.

Me too, even if the Timney doesn't block the firing pin.

How many of those Mark-X bolt shrouds do you want?

I could use 4 of them. I've got 4 Mexican 1936 actions sitting on the bench and I need a winter project or 2.

The easiest upgrade is just a streamlined bolt shroud & a trigger with a safety, like a Timney.

But I've done a couple using a 3-position Dakota safety & you need a mill & measuring tool to install those.

Never did a 2- position like the ones JKOB has........ sounds like they are easier.

1936 Mexicans are small rings, so large ring bolt shrouds might not fit.
